The Dryden Red and Black
December 13, 2021
Virtual Learning This Week
Because of the contagious nature of the current COVID variant and increasing numbers of positive cases and recommended quarantines, Dryden Junior/Senior High School will be moving to virtual learning for the week of December 13-17. We will return to face-to-face instruction immediately after the winter break on January 3, 2022. The Lapeer County Education and Technology Center will remain open.
If you are an EdTech student, the bus will leave the Dryden Junior/Senior High School parking lot at the normally scheduled time. If you need a ride to school to catch the EdTech bus, please let us know; otherwise, the only high school buses that will be running will be the EdTech runs.
Students will log into their classes remotely using the link provided by their teachers in their Google Classroom. All assignments will be in Google Classroom as well.

Senior Seminar Speakers
Four County Community Foundation & Lapeer County Community Foundation
by Ashley Hickmott
Every high school senior knows what a scholarship is, and if you don’t, please read the next few lines slowly. A scholarship is financial aid support awarded to a student based on academic achievement or other achievements. So basically, free money, and who doesn’t want that? The more scholarships you apply for, the more you can get and the less you have to pay for out of pocket. It only takes about a half hour to sit and fill out, and that could be a 1,000 dollar half-hour you just did. Easy and simple.
Nancy Boxey and Micaela Boomer both work at community foundations that provide many, many scholarships for students to apply for. Micaela works at the Four County Community Foundation, which represents parts of Lapeer, Oakland, St. Clair, and Macomb counties. Nancy works for the Lapeer County Community Foundation, meaning the scholarships are only offered to high school students who go to school in Lapeer county.
Among all the scholarships they have, when you make an account with the Four County Community Foundation they make you put all your academics, athletics, financial, and extracurricular activities down and they automatically set you up with the best match scholarships. The money for these scholarships comes from many different people who have generously donated their money because they want to see the youth get educated. Both foundations also offer scholarships to college students throughout all the years.
I think any high school or college student in Lapeer County should definitely apply for at least a couple of scholarships because since the pool of students is a lot smaller than some of the state or national scholarships where you are competing against tens of thousands of students.
Zack Ballinger
by Becca Weiss
I really enjoyed Zack Ballinger’s presentation and his story. He really made all of us feel really comfortable and we were all really engaged in what he had to say. He talked about this life growing up and how to handle your mental health throughout all the ups and downs in your life.
One quote that he kept repeating that really stuck with me was something along the lines of with every success there is always going to be a struggle. I forget the word he used but I really liked it because basically, he's saying to succeed you have to have failure. I feel like a lot of people, including myself, forget that sometimes. No one is perfect and I think that's really important to remember when you fail instead of being so hard on yourself for messing up.
For example, if I was a perfect volleyball player and never messed up anything I did, it would not be as rewarding as it is. I need to fail to succeed. I was also really inspired by his life growing up and how he pushed through all his challenges in life. But I also loved how he mentioned after everything he did that was super cool like graduating college he also told us that it was actually a struggle and it's not just fun and games he gave us the reality of life and I thought that was cool because most people don't show their failure.
Moving forward after this presentation I view life in a better way knowing that it’s okay to mess up and your mental health is important. Do what makes you happy in life because you only have one and it's very short so make the most of it while you can.
