Dig It!
We had LOTS going on in the garden this week!
Monday Ms. Gibson’s cooking club made 2 different types of veggie pizzas!
Tuesday morning we hosted our first Garden Club meeting and our students got to harvest and taste lettuce fresh out of the garden and a radish! They were amazed at how crisp the lettuce was, and most were not thrilled with the strong taste of the radish, but every one of them tried it! Great job Garden Club!
Ms. Gibson’s class and Ms. Haydu’s class were TV stars this Wednesday when Fox 61 News visited our Garden! They showed Julia LeBlanc around the garden, let her taste the Lemon Basil Sorbet that Ms. Gibson’s class made, and released some butterflies back into the garden. Check out the Memorial Garden on Fox 61 News!
Sadly, we had to postpone our ICE CREAM IN THE GARDEN Ribbon Cutting ceremony due to the rain. But please join us on Tuesday 10/18 for Ice Cream and Hot Cider, crafts, scavenger hunts and more!!! Festivities start at 5:30 in the garden and the Ribbon Cutting will be at 6:00!
News From the Library Media Center
Hi Cheetah families!
It has been a busy month in the Memorial School library! Students have been practicing their library skills each week and are becoming more independent library users.
See below for grade level classroom expectations.
PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of fall, apples, and pumpkins. We have also practiced some sorts, reinforcing colors, the same and different, and practiced counting together.
Kindergarten is working on discussing the role of the author and the illustrator. We have read This is My Book and have done several sorts and songs to aid in this discussion.
First grade is beginning their unit on digital citizenship by listening to the “Mouse Who Went Surfing Alone”. We will talk about what the internet is and what kinds of things we can do with the internet. The message of these lessons is that using the internet is a big responsibility and we need adult supervision when using it.
Second grade has begun their unit on digital citizenship. They are learning about the types of information that are safe to put online versus what is unsafe. We will learn that we should never share our username/passwords, birthday, school, or address. They have also been introduced to Typing Club which is a keyboarding program they will be using up until 5th grade. In addition second graders have begun listening to Emily’s Fortune by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.
Third grade has also begun their unit on digital citizenship. They are reviewing the types of information that are safe to put online versus what is unsafe. They are also discussing how to create a safe and strong username. In addition, we have reviewed how to use Typing Club and are reading the first book of The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi.
Happy Socktober
“Each night in the United States, an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October, we want 2 million people to show that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.” --www.happysocktober.com
All month long, through library class, 3rd grade students will be collecting socks to donate to a local area shelter. Please consider donating new mens, womens, and children’s socks through October 31st. Students can drop donations off at the Memorial School library.
