Annual FOL Meeting
The Friends of the Library will hold their Annual meeting on Oct. 20th, at 10:00 in the library. Come and hear all the great new things happening, and get involved in the fun!
We will be celebrating 21 years of service to our community. WOW!
A big thank you to the FOL officers who have served the past years and will be on the docket for another term.
Kay Reeves: Chairperson
Jane McCarthy: Secretary
Teri Kendziorski: Treasurer
Sue Arneson: Membership
Patricia Doherty: Board Member
Rene' Kraus: Board Member
Danielle Mclain: Board Member
Kris Corzine: Board Member
The time, effort, and dedication these officers put into the library is so valuable and greatly appreciated!
So many people to acknowledge for the library's 21 years of sustainability and success!
Our Volunteers: We couldn’t do it without all of our Volunteers who spend countless hours to help prepare books and resources for automation, work used book sales, and assist with basic operations. Thank-you! Thank-you! Thank-you!
The Big Sky Resort Tax Board: Our very first request back in 2000 was for $28,000. Amazing how much the library world has grown and all the resources we have available now. Thanks for the support throughout the years!
Finally, our FOL Members: Your financial support these past 21 years, assisting us with programming and purchasing expenses, has been instrumental in allowing us to achieve our goals. Thank-you for your years of support!
October “kicks” off our yearly membership drive. If you would like to become a member just click on our website www.bigskylibrary.com and then go to the "Donate" tab and see the ways you can contribute.
We are so fortunate to live in a community that understands the importance of libraries and education in our world. On to Year 22 WOO HOO!
The Big Sky Fire Department is coming to Story Time!
* It will be important to let the preschool kids know and have the adults joining help keep the kids at a distance. Close interaction with firefighters and inside tours of fire trucks is not an option this time. Kiddos can visit and look at fire trucks at a distance.
This year’s FPW campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” works to educate everyone about the different sounds the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make. Knowing what to do when an alarm sounds will keep you and your family safe. When an alarm makes noises – a beeping sound or a chirping sound – you must take action.
Storytime in October
We love Halloween stories and are excited to read them all month. The culmination of Halloween stories will be a Halloween party storytime on October 25th. We will have fun activities, including a costume parade, so come dressed up and ready to party!
New Releases
Did you know that October is National Book Month?
Here are a few other reasons you should get your nose buried in a great piece of literature this month.
- Reading provides mental stimulation. Just like any other muscle in our bodies, our brains need exercise and nourishment to help it stay strong and healthy. Studies have also shown that it can slow, or even prevent altogether, diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dimentia.
- It reduces stress. Reading has the power to take you to another place and help you forget about any stress going on in your life in the real world. Take a well-deserved break and sit down with a book.
- It provides you with knowledge. Even if you’re reading fiction, everything you take in provides your brain with new knowledge… And that’s something that can never be taken away from you.
- Reading expands your vocabulary and memory, according to research. The more you read, the more you get exposed to new words and expressions, which strengthens your personal vocabulary more and more each day. It improves your memory because it trains your brain to remember characters, plots, and other things that are happening in your book after you set it down.
- Last but certainly not least, it’s free entertainment!

Fun Fact
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
