Kutztown Elementary School

Autumn is full of tradition and transition. At KES we will continue the tradition of an author visit by welcoming local author, Lisa Schnell, on October 19 (more details later in this newsletter). Kindergarten will carry on their traditional excursion to North Park to observe the trees there. Our traditional Halloween Parade will take place on October 28.

We are transitioning to cooler days, which means the need for warmer clothing to wear for recess and at the bus stop. We will see our garden transition to the next phase as frost settles in and our crops cease producing. We have transitioned from the excitement and uncertainty of the new school year to comfort and routine after six weeks of school.

We will welcome local author of High Tide for Horseshoe Crabs, Lisa Schnell, on October 19. In preparation for her visit, we will conduct our first-ever school-wide read-aloud. Students in kindergarten will be read to by third graders, students in first grade will be read to by fourth-graders, and students in second grade will be read to by fifth-graders. We will gather as a community of readers for this event on October 12. Additionally, EVERY student will receive an autographed copy of the book!

· Costumes MUST be something students can put on by themselves.

· Masks, excessive face paint, or other props that disguise student faces are NOT permitted.

· Weapons, replicas of weapons, violent themes and the like are prohibited.

· Family members are invited to watch the parade on macadam near the playground. (no entry to the school, please report directly to the macadam).

· Only parents invited by the teacher to assist with classroom celebrations will be permitted to enter the building prior to the parade.

**If you intend to take your student home after the parade, you MUST send in a note on or before Friday, October 28. PHONE CALLS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. We will dismiss students with notes from the cafeteria at approximately 3:10. Any students without a note will be dismissed according to their usual routine.**
