May-June Newsletter
Rockfield Elementary
Notes from the principal
Every school year the end of the year seems to come way too fast. This year seems exceptionally fast! It has been such a wonderful year getting back to normal with learning activities in the classroom, field trips, assemblies and more. Additionally, our teachers navigated our new writing curriculum so well that our students are producing more high quality writing than ever before. We are all excited to see what next year brings with our writers as they will be in the second full year of the writing program. Next school year we also have a few teachers planning to pilot a couple reading programs to determine the best fit for the all four elementary schools in the years to come.
As we wind down the year, our teachers consistently find fun, creative ways to keep students engaged in learning. The timing works well with our final character trait of the year. Get ready for some fun as we focus on Creativity this month! One way to think about Creativity is “using your imagination to create something new or solve a problem.” Opportunities to be Creative are all around us! How can you find ways to be Creative as a family this month? Creativity is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management.
MAP TESTING
K-2 MAP
This spring the Germantown School District is expanding our universal screener to students in Kindergarten through Second grade for math and reading. The students in these grades will be participating in the MAP Growth Assessment, specifically designed for young students. Students will test on a touchscreen Chromebook and have all questions read to them via the device. Similar to MAP Growth for students in grades 3-5, this assessment is adaptive and will give teachers and parents a RIT score that will track students' growth over time. For additional information about MAP testing, please view the family guide.
6th Grade Math Placement
At Kennedy Middle School, students have the opportunity to take advanced math classes if they meet the criteria established by the Germantown School District. Students who meet the criteria to take 6/7 Math as a 6th grade student if they score advanced on two or more 5th-grade MAP assessments.
The majority of KMS students are placed in the grade-level math class. If your child meets the criteria for advanced math class, you will receive a letter after MAP reports are completed detailing that placement. All families will have the opportunity to opt out of advanced math placement 6th-grade.
Mix It Up Lunch - Monday, May 8th
On Monday, May 8th Rockfield Elementary School will celebrate Mix It Up at lunch! Mix It Up at lunch encourages students to sit with someone new at lunch to learn more about themselves and others. It also gives us a chance to make new friends. We are all both different and similar in so many ways, and we can grow as individuals when we try something new! Let’s have some fun!
On May 8th, a team of teachers will meet all students inside the cafeteria and give each student a color. Your color might be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, or pink. When students get their color they will find a table the same color as their color and sit next to someone new. After students sit down they talk to other students! Remember to wear mismatched clothing! Let’s have fun and mix it up!
Notes from the health room
What an amazing year we have had here at Rockfield. It is hard to believe that we are sending out our final newsletter for this school year. Just a few notes/reminders for the end of the year...
ALL medication that is here at school needs to be picked by the last day of school at 4:15pm. Students are not allowed to transport any time of medication to or from school so with that being said, a parent/guardian must pick up the medication. If you need to pick up after the last day of school the office will be open until the 15th but please call ahead of time to make sure our secretary will be in at the time of pick up (262)262-628-8120.
I have truly enjoyed being able to meet your children and spend time with them this year. We sure do have a great group of children here at Rockfield and I will miss them throughout the summer! I'm sure I will see a few of you at some of our summer sporting events/practices!
See you all next year! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions!
Take care,
Heather Traindl
Notes from PTA
Elections were held at our last PTA meeting. Lindsey Snopek will serve as President and Melissa Harris will serve as Secretary for another 2-year term. Our Vice President and Treasurer positions still have one year left of their current term, and will be up for re-election next spring.
Our paint night and book fair were both successful once again. We had about 80 canvases sold and so many beautiful pieces of art created. Our book fair came in at $7,503.67 total sales which made us $3,569.49 in Scholastic dollars. These funds help the teachers keep their classrooms stocked with books and allows us to do our Readathon giveaway each spring. Thank you to everyone who supported us for both events.
Yearbooks are currently being printed and should arrive the last week in May. If you purchased a yearbook, it will be sent home with your student once they arrive.
We would love feedback on what you think the PTA should fundraise for. What would you like to see at Rockfield that would enhance the student experience? Past items we have fundraised for are the rock wall, gaga ball pit, portable sound system, chime bars for the music room, and playground equipment. Please email us at rockfieldpta@gmail.com with any ideas.
Looking ahead, here are our final events for the year:

May 31 - Camp Minikani - this event is organized by the school, but is paid for by the PTA. We are so happy we can use PTA funds to send grades K-5 to camp for the day.
June 5 - Inflatable day - We are renting several inflatables for the kids in K-5 to have a fun day with. We have also reserved the Kona Ice truck to give each student a sweet treat. This is a give-back event just to give the kids a fun day and to "bounce out" of Rockfield for the year.
June 6 - Last PTA meeting of the school year. 7 pm in the cafeteria. We will be voting on the budget for next year. If you would like to have a say in how our funds are spent, please plan to attend this meeting.
