LGBTQ+ Pride Month
June 2023
Curriculum Materials Center
William Paterson University
PRIDE month is celebrated in tribute to those who were involved in the Stonewall riots. This event led to the modern-day Gay Rights Movement. It is celebrated in June with parades, festivals, and concerts to commemorate solidarity, inclusivity, and identity.
There are many different identities associated with the LGBTQ+ community such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, etc. Each identity is equally valuable in the LGBTQ+ community
Harvey Milk, a politician, designed the rainbow flag as a symbol for the 1978 PRIDE march in San Francisco. He was later assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by a disgruntled former supervisor on November 23, 1978.
Bill Clinton was the first President to officially recognize PRIDE month in 1999 and 2000.
