Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way children naturally learn.

She opened the first Montessori school—the Casa dei Bambini, or Children’s House—in Rome on January 6, 1907. Subsequently, she traveled the world and wrote extensively about her approach to education, attracting many devotees. There are now more than 22,000 Montessori schools in at least 110 countries worldwide.

In August of 1993, the Des Moines Public School Board affirmed the request to begin a Montessori program. Cowles Montessori currently exists as the only public Montessori school in the state of Iowa. In 2017, the DMPS School Board approved the creation of Iowa's second public Montessori school to open in 2020-2021.

It’s been a busy week for the Cowles Middle School. Students have been learning new concepts in geometry, chemistry, environmental interactions, argument writing, history, and constitutional amendments. Our eighth graders are realizing that high school is right around the corner, and our seventh graders are realizing that their next move up at Cowles will be their last. On a lighter note, spring is right around the corner. With it comes new lesson units, new rounds of assessments, and a promise of summer.

Girls on the Run is an afterschool program like no other! On Tuesdays and Thursdays starting March 20 to May 24, girls will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills. Trained and caring coaches lead 3-6 grade girls through interactive lessons and running activities. The season ends with a noncompetitive 5K event. Register at www.dmymca.org/girlsontherun
