News and Info from HCS -- March 22, 2023
From Your Superintendent
Hornet Nation,
I would like to take this opportunity to talk about school bus, car, and pedestrian safety. At our last Board meeting, several of our bus drivers attended to share their ongoing safety concerns. Our drivers transport about half of our students, and drive a total of 900 miles each day.
After listening to them, I did a bit of research and came up with these facts from the MDE website:
- School buses are the safest mode of transportation for getting children back and forth to school. Riding in a school bus is safer than walking, riding a bicycle, or being driven to school in private vehicles.
- The majority of bus-related deaths and injuries involve pedestrians.
So, to keep everyone safe, here are three things we are asking all families to read with their children.
First, please continue to have discussions with your children around bus safety, regardless if they ride the bus or not:
- Never walk behind a bus
- Never cut in between the buses when they are parked at our schools
- When crossing in front of a single bus, stay 10 feet away and make eye contact with the driver before crossing
Second, for both our adult and student drivers:
- Drive slowly in all school zones
- Do not pass any bus when on school property (and never pass on a road when red lights are flashing)
- Stay clear of the bus unloading/loading lanes
Third, for our pedestrians and adults who may be picking them up off campus:
- Always use the crosswalks, especially when at Larson - darting across Spruce Street at spots other than the crosswalk is incredibly dangerous
I believe that if we all commit to these three pieces, we can keep everyone safe. As always, please reach out with any questions, comments, or suggestions.
In partnership and with Hornet Pride,
Judy

Health Information
COVID-19 protocols for positive cases, staff or student:
- With a positive case, the person must isolate for 5 days and not attend or be in school. In counting those days, the first date of symptoms (or the test, if no symptoms) is day 0.
- The COVID-positive person may return to school on Day 6, assuming symptoms are subsiding. We recommend, but do not require, masking for days 6-10 in school.
We are also attaching a handy resource from public health officials that provides guidance on when to keep a child home from school in a variety of illness-related situations.
