Principal Message: Afternoon Academic Support & Holiday Traditions Continue On
Hello Hawk families,
As you are aware, this month we again find ourselves back in the remote learning environment. We're having fairly consistent attendance and academic success with our AM live learning classes, however, we are continuing to try and find ways to get our students to come back to us virtually for the PM study support time.
If you find yourself in conflict with your student, struggling to get them to heed your request to get them to log back in for the afternoon support sessions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am happy, if given the opportunity to talk directly to your student over the phone, to give them a little pep/motivational talk, or even a strongly worded principal voiced "you must attend the PM time with your teacher" message, to get them to log back in with us for those afternoon sessions with their teachers.
Starting on Monday, November 30th, we will be reopening the school for in-person PM academic support for small groups of students. Teachers will be notifying families directly of dates they'd like to invite your student onto campus to work in-person directly with their teacher. We know from our previous experience of having students on campus those three weeks in late October, how important in-person instruction is, and feel that opening ourselves back slowly for groups of students to be safely on campus working with our teachers is a step in the right direction. Teachers will also ask families if they need transportation and provide them with direction on how to obtain that resource.
If you feel like your student is struggling in a particular class and have not yet had an outreach attempt from the teacher, please feel free to initiate an outreach and inquire if your student is able to attend some in-person afternoon support.
Of course, all health guidelines apply including mask wearing, distancing, and the need for the student to complete the COVID Skyward Screener prior to arriving to campus.
Our school is also committed to keep our holiday traditions alive this year. The Christmas Eve Luncheon is a rich part of our CPHS Hawk culture, and while this year we will not be able to have an in-person dinner, we are working on having a curbside pick-up option for families. More information will be sent in the next few weeks with details on our curbside pick-up Christmas Even Luncheon plan.
We also know this is a time of hardship for many and so we have planned for a few ways families can give to those in need during this time. Our annual Giving Tree operation is in full swing, led by our Key Club and advisor Ms. Madison Elmenhurst. A flyer is below. We hope you can find an opportunity to participate this season. We also have partnerships with the College Place Lions Club for a winter clothing and toy drive, with bins set-up in the Main Office Lobby.
Mr. James is spearheading our Food Drive efforts and will be sending out more information soon about how you can help be a part of feeding our community this winter.
Lastly, we are excited to be a part of the community's Parade of Lights event this December 5th. Drive by the CPHS campus and you will see our school busses festively decorated and on display for all to enjoy.
I hope you and your loved ones have a peaceful and loving holiday season this year. From all of us at College Place High School we wish you a happy holidays and look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

December 4th End of Trimester 1; December 21-22 Distance Learning Days
On December 21st and 22nd, we will not have any live learning instruction, however, we are counting those as distance learning days where teachers will have Google Classroom learning activities for students. If you have any questions, please check in with your student's teachers to find out what they are expecting from students those two distance learning days.
Ms. Puller Science Class embarks on Agriculture Based Marketing Campaign
Students in Ms. Puller's 9th grade Agriculture Science course have been creating usable advertisements for local Agriculture Businesses.
Students worked on interviewing skills, learned about the various commodities our valley produces, and the local businesses that sell those commodities. Some businesses may even decide to use the student created material, giving our students an incredible opportunity to add to their own resumes.
Dream Lab students engage in Engineering Design Process
Students in Mr. Goeden's Dream Lab class are constantly being asked to come up with unique solutions to various types of scenarios. In this picture, you see student Ben Tkalov who was asked to construct the tallest free-standing structure possible, using only tape and paper.
In this type of engineering design lesson, students analyzed the parameters for both qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints, designed a solution, implemented it, and evaluated it for improvement. By going through iterations of the Engineering Design Process, students are not only learning multiple 21st century skills to advance their future, but they are practicing work ethic and creativity demands that will advance them far in their future employment pursuits.
Partnership with "Reach Out Walla Walla"
Reach Out Walla Walla, a local partner with our Trilogy Community Services, is in the process of conducting their yearly survey to understand adult concerns facing teens in Walla Walla. This survey will be given in every county and will assess concerns around substance use/abuse and mental health for our community’s youth. The survey is anonymous, and should take no more than 5 minutes for you to complete. Results will be shared with the public in the spring of 2021, prioritizing your concerns for our youth.
Please take a few minutes to help Reach Out by completing this survey. For more information contact Peggy Needham at pneedham@co.walla-walla.wa.us or call 524.2654.
