Recommended for history buffs and novices alike, 1776 is a Pulitzer Prize-winning narrative that recounts the story of the birth of the United States of America.
Summer is a great time to read!
Kindred
Mixing historical fiction with science fiction, Kindred tells the story of a young African-American woman living in 1976 who is transported back in time on multiple occasions to Maryland before the Civil War.
City of Bones
The inspiration for the Shadowhunters TV series on the FreeForm channel, City of Bones is the first installment in Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series. Fantasy fans will love this title!
The Girl Who Fell From the Sky
The Girl Who Fell From the Sky tells the story of Rachel, the biracial daughter of a Danish mother and an African-American father, as she struggles to fit into a new community after a family tragedy. This novel explores racism and feeling like an outsider from multiple angles.
Witch and Wizard
Co-authored by perennial favorite James Patterson, Witch and Wizard is the first in a series of books about teenagers who wake up unexpectedly as wanted criminals accused of witchcraft.
Phantoms
Known for his suspense-filled writing, Dean Koontz does not disappoint in one of his bestselling books. Phantoms tells the story of an town whose residents have mysteriously died and the unexpected cause of their untimely demise!
Cat's Cradle
Told with Vonnegut's signature satirical voice, Cat's Cradle is a cult classic science fiction novel that explores the possibility of what can happen when humankind wields the power of science to cause its own destruction.
Extraordinary Means
Fans of The Fault in Our Stars and Eleanor & Park will gravitate to this title. Told with humor and hope, Extraordinary Means tells the story of teenagers with a fatal disease who fall in love and face their mortality together.
Purple Heart
After being awarded a military medal for injuries sustained as a soldier, Private Matt Duffy struggles with a sense of guilt for his role in the death of a young Iraqi boy. In Purple Heart, Patricia McCormick explores the hard-hitting subject of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in this accessible novel.
Not a Game: The Incredible Rise and Unthinkable Fall of Allen Iverson
Sometimes fame gets to a person's head and negatively influences the course of a life. Not a Game tells the story of Allen Iverson--once an NBA superstar in the making, Iverson allowed his own ego to take control of his life and lead to his eventual fall from grace.
Bleachers
Often one of the Top Ten books here at BHS, Bleachers is the story of a high school football star upon returning to his hometown to reunite with his fellow players for the funeral of his former coach. John Grisham makes the characters come alive in this brief but powerful novel.
If I Grow Up
DeShawn has spent his whole life surrounded by gangs, guns, and drugs. He works hard every day to make a better life for himself and his family, but can't help being jealous of the material things so many of his friends get for joining into a gang. In If I Grow Up, author Todd Strasser explores the struggles of growing up in an inner city.

Inkheart
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the characters in a book came to life? In Inkheart that is exactly what happens! Meggie's father has the ability to "read" characters into real life and accidentally pushed Meggie's mother into a story years ago. Will they ever be able to get her back?
