Curriculum Corner
As parents, we know the value of having confidence in what we do and how we present ourselves to others. But teaching confidence is not something that can be done without practice. At school, teachers are providing direct and specific feedback to help their students grow as learners. Ex, “I really got a clear picture of your setting through your use of strong adjectives.” Instead of, “Great story.” At home, I was looking for language that could be used to continue to support and develop confidence, without having to be content or school work specific. This article by Corie Kison, identified 55 statements to use with children to help support and develop their confidence and self esteem. Some of the statements that resonated with me were:
You are helpful.
We can try it your way.
It’s good to be curious.
You don’t have to be perfect to be amazing.
You can try again tomorrow.
That was a really good choice.
We all know that words motivate and inspire us to do great things and if positive phrases are used with our children, these positive affirmations will become part of who they are as students and as adults. For more positive things to say to your child, see the full list here.
