The Junior Summer Study Award is presented to members of NEHS who are high school juniors, rising to the senior class in fall 2020. This award is intended to support students who have been selected for or who will be attending a summer learning program that is related to English studies in a direct way. Up to two awards for $750 will be offered each year.
This award is competitive in nature; applications will be evaluated by members of the Advisory Council of NEHS.
Criteria
- The student must be an NEHS member in good standing of an active chapter.
- The student must be a high school junior prior to the summer of study.
- The program of study must be offered by an established institution or organization that is identified in the required documentation. Provide a link to the institution or organization website for verification.
- The parent/guardian and NEHS Chapter Advisor of the student must review the application essay document.
- Students receiving an award must agree to write about the learning experience for the NEHS blog, the NEHS Museletter, upon the conclusion of the study. Photos of the experience, with captions, must accompany the article.
- The program must be related to English studies in a demonstrable way.
Evaluation of the Applications
- The Central Office will verify the active membership of the student(s) and of chapter(s).
- The Advisory Council members will review all applications and rank them based on the quality of the information received and the connection to English studies that the program offers.
- The winner(s) of the stipend will receive a check for $750 to be applied toward registration, travel, tuition, room and board, or materials.
Application Essay Document
Each application must include an application essay document written by the student explaining:
- the applicant’s passion for English studies and how this experience will nurture that passion;

The application must also reflect the highest standards of writing, including clear content, effective organization, and deliberate and careful word choice; the narrative must be precise and free of grammatical, usage, and punctuation errors.
The award is intended for use as a supplement for travel, tuition, books and materials, and/or room and board costs. It should not be used for incidental purchases or entertainment.

Summer Reading - The 2019 NEHS Common Reader
The Common Reader
The process of selecting a Common Reader for the NEHS network challenges the Advisory Council members each year. As announced, the 2019-2020 Common Reader will be A Place for Us, by Fatima Farheen Mirza; the Advisory Council members gathered in St. Louis a few weeks ago spent considerable time reviewing numerous books and the data from the Common Reader survey distributed several months ago before making a decision. We also considered the results of the scholarship scores we had just used to determine the recipients of this year’s Merit scholarships. A summary of our deliberations follows.
A Place for Us
The Scholarships
A Place for Us rose to the top of the suggested texts for a range of reasons: it is contemporary; it addresses current, very real, societal issues; using it likely expands and stretches the applicants’ reading backgrounds; the complexity of structure, theme, character development, and emotional impact will, we believe, resonate with many students. The Council also felt we would be able to craft thoughtful and challenging prompts that would engage our members.
Applicants for the Merit Scholarships are to read this text and select a prompt as the basis of their application submissions.
- Prompts posted: Nov. 4, 2019
- Scholarship Applications accepted: Dec. 9, 2019 - Jan. 21, 2020.
Collegiate Scholarships
NEHS supports students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance in English studies, NEHS members who have been active participants in National English Honor Society, and who qualify for a collegiate award due to income and/or family circumstance.
The winner(s) of the scholarships will be awarded financial assistance in varying amounts based on the decisions of the Advisory Council. A combined total amount of up to $15,000 will be distributed.
These awards are competitive in nature; members of the Advisory Council of NEHS will evaluate applications.
Criteria
- The applicant must be a member of NEHS in good standing of an active chapter.
- The applicant must be a high school senior graduating in the spring of 2019.
- Applicants must have unique circumstances that qualify consideration for a need-based scholarship, i.e., eligible for free or reduced lunch programs, family circumstances, or other mitigating factors that present financial barriers to higher education.
- The applicant must present evidence of academic achievement in English studies as well as significant involvement in NEHS activities.
- Applicant narrative essay and school official letters must be received by the deadline posted.
Evaluation of Applications
- The Central Office will verify the active membership of the student(s) and chapter(s).
- The Advisory Council members will review all applications and rank them based on the information received.
- The winner(s) of the scholarships will receive checks to be applied toward college or university expenses.
Application Process
NEHS uses the AwardSpring platform for the application process. Please use the AwardSpring link on the AwardSpring Applications web page to apply for scholarships and submit the required application materials, including the requested recommendation and the student counselor verification letters.
Required Application Materials
1. Student Narrative Essay
An applicant-written narrative submitted to NEHS outlining the academic accomplishments and goals the writer has achieved and the goals she/he seeks to achieve in the future. The essay should discuss the passion with which the student engages in English studies and how that passion will be nurtured in the future. This award is competitive, so the narrative should clearly outline the specific situation(s) that qualify the applicant for a scholarship based on need. Highest consideration will be given to those submitting narratives that reflect creativity, sincerity, and clear delineation of need. Include specific information about higher education plans, i.e., college/university enrollment, assumed major area of study, career goals, etc. Outstanding writing skills should also be reflected; poorly written narratives may disqualify the applicant.
2. NEHS Chapter Experiences
Applicant will respond to two questions within the general application portion of AwardSpring that provide insight to the applicant's perspective on English studies.
3. NEHS Chapter Advisor Recommendation Letter
A letter on school stationery from the NEHS Chapter Advisor detailing the applicant’s academic success in English studies, how the student has been a positive participant in NEHS, and how she/he has risen above challenging circumstances must also be submitted.
4. Student Counselor Verification Letter
A letter on school stationery from the student’s school counselor or other school official verifying the collegiate status of the applicant must be submitted with all other documents. It is not necessary to send personal details from a FAFSA; rather, the school official must confirm in writing the student qualifies for free/reduced lunch programs or other assistance, the family circumstances that currently limit financial resources, and/or other unique situations meriting consideration for this scholarship. The letter should go beyond factual information and should include the writer’s impressions of the student’s character and motivation; anecdotal examples of the student’s engagement in academics and NEHS are encouraged.
Deadline for the scholarship application is January 14, 2019, 11:59 p.m. CST.
Please address any questions to nehsapply@niu.edu.
Intellectual Freedom Challenge (IFC)
NEHS, in partnership with Sigma Tau Delta, presents the Intellectual Freedom Challenge (IFC) that will encourage students to write rationale essays based on such potentially controversial texts and to compete for monetary awards. The "Crafton Awards" are named after Dr. Robert Crafton, past president of Sigma Tau Delta, whose vision generated this effort.
The essays will be submitted to NEHS for assessment by members of Sigma Tau Delta and the Advisory Council of NEHS. This project is open only to sophomore and/or junior members of NEHS from chapters in good standing.
- From the pool of submitted essays, up to twelve will be selected for the Crafton Awards; each student writer of the top essays will receive a $25 Better World Books gift certificate and $100. Their sponsoring chapters will receive $50.
- Winning regional essays will be forwarded to National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE); essays selected to become part of the rationale holdings of National Council of Teachers of English (up to a maximum of six) will result in an additional $150 award for the student writers and $50 for their sponsoring NEHS chapters.
Submission deadline is Monday, October 7, 2019, 11:59 p.m. CDT
