ELA Intervention Newsletter
Mrs. Beck: March 2023
What is ELA Intervention?
The goal of ELA intervention is to "fill the gaps" in your child's learning. We identify students in need of intervention using data from the IXL benchmark, NJSLA test results and classroom data. During this instructional time, students come to my classroom and specific targeted skills are introduced and reinforced. Reading skills are reinforced using a program called LLI, Leveled Literacy Intervention, or other combinations of articles, short passages, etc. Progress and growth is monitored weekly using IXL.
Ways to help at home
- Encourage your child to log on to IXL at home to practice a recommended skill
- Your child should be reading a book at their reading level every night for at least 20 minutes
- Ask your child questions about what they are reading. Here is a link to some examples: https://www.scholastic.com/worldofpossible/sites/default/files/PamAllyn_20_Questions_to_Get_Kids_Talking_About_Books.pdf
Here are some common skills we have been working on
- Making inferences based off character's actions, dialogue, and thoughts
- What does his action say about him?
-Based off what the character said, how can we infer she is feeling?
- Using punctuation and capitalization accurately
-Capitalize historical events, names of people and places, and within dialogue
-Use commas between adjectives, in a list and within dialogue
- Homophones, synonyms/antonyms, and using Greek and Latin roots in vocabulary
- Finding theme
- Using appropriate evidence to support a claim
Tracking Data
Students will also be keeping track of their own progress throughout the year using the IXL data tracking sheets. This allows students to take ownership over their learning and become self-motivated to improve. We celebrate milestones with certificates and rewards. They should be so proud of their hard work!
