Great Things Happening at Anton ISD
Positive Changes
Week of January 8
New Faces on Campus
We had an eventful break with the hire of several new staff members! Please welcome Ashlyn Vessel, Stefanie Cortez, and Megan Garcia Gutierrez to the Bulldog family!
Ashlyn Vessel comes to us from Muleshoe, and she is our new Music Director! Beginning this semester, Mrs. Vessel will be introducing music to our elementary and junior high students. Over the course of the next few years, she will be reviving our band program. We are thrilled to welcome Ashlyn aboard, and we look forward to her sharing her passion for music with our students!
Stefanie Cortez comes to us from Lubbock, and she is our new 6th & 7th grade math & science teacher! Mrs. Cortez previously worked here in the 2019-2020 school year, and she received a warm welcome from our staff members that taught with her previously. With over nine years of teaching experience, Stefanie has the content knowledge necessary to address our students' learning gaps and get them where they need to be. We are ecstatic to welcome Mrs. Cortez back into the Bulldog family!
Megan Garcia Gutierrez is deeply rooted in the Anton community, and she is our new elementary aide. Megan is married to Joseph Gutierrez, and they have 4 children, three of which are students in Anton ISD. We are excited to bring Megan aboard!
Student Organizations
Get Involved!
National Honor Society
National Honor Society, or NHS, is a national organization that teaches students about service, leadership, and character. Keep your grades up and demonstrate integrity, and you could be invited to become a member of this prestigious organization.
While the chapter is still new, this semester we will be welcoming the next round of inductees! These future leaders will have opportunities to apply for national scholarships, build service hours that look great on a resume, and participate in the organization's other available activities! If you are interested in NHS, please see Dr. Neff!
Art Club
Do you like to draw, paint, sculpt, or illustrate? The AHS Art Club meets once a week to spend time creating, and Dr. Neff shares opportunities to enter work in competitions with students at those meetings. With enough dedication, practice, and time, you can create anything your imagination pursues! Getting involved could mean chasing big dreams like entering your work to hang in a gallery. Right now we are still taking entries for the East New Mexico University gallery competition which will close in March. See Dr. Neff for details if you’d like to compete!
Spanish Club
Small groups are more effective for practicing and learning language. Learning how to speak and utilize Spanish in social contexts can open up numerous opportunities for someone, especially if they want to work with the public! The AHS Spanish Club meets once a week to try our hand at talking to each other in Spanish. We also keep our eyes open for language and culture fairs that show the range of language expression through competitions and exhibits! ¿Quieres saber más? ¡Pregúntame!
Chess Club
Chess is an analytical game, and Dr. Neff loves learning how to play it better. Chess club meets once a week to exercise our brains and enjoy friendly competition with one of the world’s older board games. Come check it out so that you don’t leave your queen hanging or smother your king!
Student Council
This year, we brought back Student Council! While the organization is still new, we look forward to growing interest in finding ways for students to serve our student body. Ideal candidates exhibit positive leadership qualities and take initiative to discuss student ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and administrators. If you are interested in creating positive change on our campus, see Mr. Verkamp or Mr. Knowles.
Career & Technical Education

There are three courses in Culinary Arts currently offered. We begin with the simple things first, such as kitchen safety and sanitation, then move on to kitchen tools and equipment, safe knife skills, how to budget for groceries and how to make a menu. The students learn how to correctly measure recipes, how to read a recipe and how to set up their food lab stations using mis en plas techniques of gathering all necessary ingredients before beginning. All three classes are actively prepping, cooking and baking all types of foods according to our online curriculum sections.
Child Development
Our Child Development course is a full year class that begins at conception and moves through the developmental stages of a human being. We also research careers in this pathway and learn how to care for children from birth to 12 years of age as well as how to budget for all the things that are involved in raising children and running a successful household. In the spring semester, we go observe and help in the pre-kindergarten room, which is always lots of fun!
