In This Edition of the SPS Weekly Newsletter...
We are excited to share the latest edition of the SPS Weekly Newsletter with our families, students, staff, and community members! A new edition will be sent each week when school is in session, sharing updates, previewing upcoming events, and showcasing the amazing work being done in our schools. Since there is no school this Friday in observance of Veterans Day, we are publishing this week's newsletter a day early. This week we feature Dr. Baeta's weekly message, the O'Donnell Middle School's Veterans Day Assembly, essay contest winners, and more!
From the Desk of the Superintendent
The celebration of Veterans Day is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate those who have served our country. It is unlike Memorial Day, which is a day of respect for those who served and lost their lives, but both days require our attention.
Participation as community members is important and I hope that this Veterans Day you take the time to be active and present. Consider the following:
Thank a Veteran for their service.
Write a letter to a Veteran.
Attend the local parade (It starts at 10am on Saturday, November 11, going through Stoughton center, with ceremonies at Town Hall and Faxon Park.).
Participate in the local parade.
In the end, I am able to write this because a Veteran has kept me safe by serving our great nation.
Have a great Veterans Day!
Joseph F. Baeta, Ed.D.

Enjoy the long weekend and we will see you back in school on Monday, November 13!
OMS Veterans Day Assembly
The O'Donnell Middle School had its annual 8th Grade Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday. A group of 8th grade students interviewed local veterans and then presented their veteran to their classmates during the assembly. The OMS 8th grade band and chorus also performed. This is such a great tradition and is an event the OMS looks forward to hosting each year.
Special thanks to the local veterans who participated - Glen Camire, Joe Fustolo, Matthew Gada, Mark Hausammann, John Marchant, Katherine McFadden, Michael Pazyra, Bill Snyder, Jacob Tapper, Teresa Tapper, and Doug Wall. Mike Child, Joseph DeVito, and Pamela Starkie also participated virtually.
The OMS 8th grade students who presented during the assembly did a great job - Tana Bernard, Izzy Bukhenik, Olivia Felton, Logan Fontaine, Anderson Gomez Romero, Ezra La Motte, Sydney Leahy, Angel Mauras, Eva Musatov, Joey Toupin, and Andrea Udeh.
The students and veterans are pictured together above.

During the assembly, Mark Hausammann, a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, received the O'Donnell Middle School Veteran of the Year Award. Mr. Hausammann, a 1966 graduate of Stoughton High, served in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army, and remains active supporting veterans today. Congratulations!
Finally, a big thank you to 8th Grade Social Studies teacher Caitlin Valair (pictured with Mr. Hausammann) for all of the work that goes into organizing this event and thanks to the OMS food services staff for preparing a delicious brunch for the veterans to enjoy prior to the assembly!
Check out the Stoughton Public Schools Facebook page over the next few days for many more photos from this ceremony!
Hansen School Makes Cards for Veterans
Hansen School students made cards for veterans this week, decorating the front of the card and writing a message inside expressing gratitude for their service. These cards will be given to the Stoughton Redevelopment Authority to display for the Veterans Day parade on Saturday.
The Redevelopment Authority is located across from the Town Hall, which is on the parade route, and will be open for veterans to enjoy coffee, water, cupcakes, and cookies during the parade. First grade students are pictured below with some of the cards that were made.
Essay Contest Winners Honored at SHS & OMS
Congratulations to Andrew Causey (1st place), Noah Schwenzfeier (2nd place), and Adam Raja (3rd place), all sophomores at Stoughton High School, for winning the VFW's Voice of Democracy audio essay contest at the local level this school year!
High school students across the country enter this contest. This year, students were asked to record a 3-5 minute audio essay answering "What are the greatest attributes of our Democracy?" At SHS, students in the Pre-AP US History class submitted entries.
Stoughton American Legion Commander Michael Pazyra, representing the Stoughton VFW on behalf of Commander James Kelly, presented certificates and prizes to the local winners at SHS last week. The three winners from SHS are pictured above with Commander Pazyra, SHS Principal Julie Miller, SHS History Department Director Jaime Regan, and SHS Pre-AP US History teacher Melanie Ingrao.
At the O'Donnell Middle School, 8th grade students Jhayla Sealy (1st place), Colin Thornton (2nd place), and Jason Ikonitskiy (3rd place) won the VFW's Patriot's Pen Essay Contest at the local level this school year! Congratulations!
All students on team 8B at the OMS recently participated in this annual contest. The Patriot's Pen contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300-400 word essay expressing their views on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. The 2023 essay theme was “How are you inspired by America?”
Commander Pazyra, representing the Stoughton VFW again on behalf of Commander Kelly, presented certificates and prizes to the winners at the O’Donnell Middle School Wednesday morning. The three winners from OMS are pictured above with Commander Pazyra, OMS Principal Katrina Crowley, and team 8B social studies teacher Caitlin Valair.
National Signing Day at SHS
November 8th was National Signing Day, when high school student athletes from across the country sign their National Letter of Intent to play Division 1 or 2 collegiate sports. Congratulations to Stoughton High senior Morgan Groppi for signing her letter of intent to play lacrosse at Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire! Morgan served as a captain of the SHS girls lacrosse team last spring, earning team MVP and Hockomock League honorable mention recognition. She is also an accomplished field hockey player at SHS, serving as a captain of the team this fall season. There was a signing ceremony for Morgan Wednesday afternoon in the SHS gymnasium where she was joined by her parents, sister, grandparents, members of the SHS administration and athletics department, as well as a group of her teammates and friends. Click here to read more about this great accomplishment and to see more photos from the signing ceremony.

Dawe School First Graders Learn About Voting
While there were no elections in Stoughton this week, voters in many communities around the country went to their polling locations on Tuesday, November 7. In honor of Election Day, Dawe School first graders learned about the voting process on Monday and took part in a mock election by setting up a polling location with voting booths in school. They even received "I voted" stickers!
Students learned why it is important to voice their opinion by voting and how they can help their community by getting out and voting. Students also learned about when people vote and how they have to go to a polling location and cast a ballot.
All of the first grade classes at the Dawe earned a compliment party and were voting on a movie to watch for the compliment party. "Monsters, Inc.", "A Bug's Life", and "101 Dalmatians" were on the ballot, and in a landslide victory, "Monsters, Inc." won! "Monsters, Inc." teaches about friendship and being open to new ideas and having a growth mindset (all part of our SEL curriculum)!
Professional Development Day
While this Tuesday was a day off for students, Stoughton Public Schools faculty were taking part in a day of professional development. SPS educators gathered at Stoughton High for a number of presentations, including hearing about the "Vision of a Graduate", a project which seeks to define the career, academic, social, and civic skills/competencies all of our graduates will need to be successful. Other presentations focused on creating a culture of belonging in the classroom, teaching newcomers, engaging families, and learning about the new rubric for teachers being piloted across the state.
SPS Hosts Regional ELE Conference
Last week, Stoughton Public Schools hosted the Southeastern ELE (English Language Education) Director's Meeting, which included Multilingual Learner administrators from Brockton, Abington, Fall River, New Bedford, and Randolph. Fall Play at SHS Next Weekend
The Stoughton High School Theatre program will be presenting "Into the Woods" next weekend at the SHS Auditorium! Performances take place Friday, November 17 at 7pm, Saturday November 18 at 1pm and 7pm, and Sunday, November 19 at 1pm. Click here for tickets and for more information.
In Into the Woods, James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite fairytale characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece...and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
Can't wait for this show!
