What to bring: Bring yourself, your family, and a healthy imagination!
Our mothers gifted us with life. Many of them also gifted us with caring for us, nurturing our spirits and encouraging us to be our best. Their job was not to just get us to where we are safely, but if they did they were successful. Once we express our gratitude to our biological mothers for bringing us here we can go beyond that very conventional definition of motherhood to something broader that applies to all of us.
The truth is that many children grow up raised by grandparents, cared for by family members, a foster parent, and nurtured by teachers, coaches, therapists, and/or mentored by elders and guided to grow into their greatness by someone outside their biological circle. These people also mothered children’s dreams and oftentimes make all the difference in the children’s lives.
So, in celebrating all mothers and all they do, ‘thank you’ to those people who are continuously mothering our children’s dreams too.
Enjoy these quotes:
1. The art of mothering is to teach the art of living to children. – Elaine Heffner
2. Biology is the least of which makes someone a mother. -Oprah Winfrey
3. I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me my whole life. – Abraham Lincoln
4. Mother’s love is peace. It need not be acquired, it need not be deserved. – Erich Fromm
5. Walking slowly in the moonlight in a row of tea plants, I realized my mother was still with me. – Thich Nhat Hanh
6. The purpose of our lives is to give birth to the best that is within us. – Marianne Williamson
7. Hugs can do great amounts of good, especially for children. – Princess Diana
8. Each day we make deposits in the memory banks of our children. – Charles F. Swindoll
9. When you are a mother you are never really alone in your thoughts. You are connected to your child and all those who touch your life. – Sophia Loren
10. Motherhood: All love begins and ends there. – Robert Browning
11. A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. – Agatha Christie

Strathmore’s Fun Day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24, 2017. The rain date will be Thursday, May 25, 2016. We are looking forward to a fun-filled, safe day.
Shorts, t-shirts, and sneakers would be most appropriate for the children to wear that day. If students would like to wear a hat they may bring one from home. They may also find sunscreen and sunglasses helpful. Sunscreen will work best if it is applied before they come to school. In order to keep all students hydrated and cool, there will be water stations set up throughout the fields. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to keep with them at all times.
A hot dog bagged lunch will be available from the cafeteria for those children wishing to buy lunch for $2.60. To help make the day run smoothly we are asking that the exact lunch amount be put into a sealed envelope with the students name and their teachers name on it, unless they will be using the money in their account.
All parents are welcome to come watch their child participate in activities during Fun Day. Please visit our websites for the exact times your children will be outside. We hope to have a great day! Thank you in advance for all of your help and support.
Sincerely,
Mr. Pappas & Mrs. Albanese
My third grader is reading above her grade level and complains that her homework is too easy. She gets 100% on all her math and spelling tests. What should I do?
Reading is the foundation for success in school ... and it sounds as if your daughter is already ahead of the game!
Try to motivate your daughter to keep striving by providing enriching reading experiences:
- Let her help you prepare meals by reading instructions from the box or cookbook.
- Let her read aloud to younger children.
- Have her read articles from the children’s page in the newspaper.
- Ask the librarian to help you find books at your daughter’s reading level.
- Subscribe to a good children’s magazine.
Make an appointment with your daughter’s teacher. Tell her you are concerned that your daughter is doing work that is too easy for her. Tell the teacher that you want to work with her to provide the best learning experience for your child. Ask if the school system has any special programs for students like your daughter.
Remember, it will not hurt your child to read widely at a third grade level if she is being introduced to new ideas and remains excited about learning and school.
