Marco Liconti is a 17 year old Sargent Central junior and our foreign exchange student this year. He comes to us from his hometown of Pescara, Italy. He describes himself as a “curious person” and that comes through in his musical study. In Italy, he was a piano player, but here he joined band and is learning to play a brand new instrument, the saxophone. He is also experimenting with the drum set and the bass guitar and has started studying our one true American art form, Jazz.

Currently, Marco is participating in band and cross country and he plans on playing basketball, running track and possibly joining speech. He lists his music lessons and P.O.D. as his favorite subjects in school and says he enjoys participating in athletics as well.

Comparing his home country to America, he says that the “teenage lifestyle” is much the same, but there are some educational differences. Not having school on Saturdays is a new experience, as is learning a new instrument and reading music in a different way than it is taught in Italy. As far as American food goes, his favorite is ribs.

If he could meet one person from history it would be “Marco Aurelio (Roman emperor and philosopher)… because he was a great man and didn’t abuse his power”.

Marco plans to take what he has learned here and at home and attend college after graduation. The music department and the school are glad to have him with us and we wish him a successful and educational school year!!

The English III class is studying non-fiction and the genre we are working on is historical speeches. Each student chose a speech, wrote an analyses of the speech and then performed it in front of the class.

The English I class is working on diagrams. Diagramming makes students clarify their thinking and identify the logical connections between different parts of the sentence. Students who diagram have to know how different parts of speech work together to produce meaning. This leads to making stronger sentences in writing and being able to fix sentences that just don't "sound right".

The English IV class gave PowerPoint presentations about the background topics which are needed to better understand the novel they will be reading, October Sky. The students taught their classmates about rocketry, coal mining towns, education in the 1950's, the Appalachian region and the political issues of the time. This pre-reading activity will help the students better understand the novel they are about to read.

The FCS II students competed in a cake baking event. Students were given the task of baking any layered cake and decorating it with a Halloween theme. Teams were judged on taste and presentation. The team of Dillon, Tyler, and Jayden won with a German chocolate cake.

The HonorS Code Market is operated by the Association of Honor Society Students under the direction of Mrs. Roney. The store features snacks for purchase based on the honor system.

The Geologic Time Scale was a very interesting project that we did in class. It is a scale to better understand the time periods and to better know what happened, when it happened, and which event came before or after something else. You can use the scale to track things in the past like when humans first appeared on earth or when the dinosaurs went extinct. It’s a great way to see what happened first: dinosaurs’ extinction and humans. The estimated age of Earth is 4.6 billion years old. It was surprising to find out that human beings have only been around for a little more than .00008 of a percent. It was fun getting to work with other classmates on this project. We did this project for us to better understand the time periods and what happened in the different periods.

Students enrolled in ITV Health Careers worked on a group Rube Goldberg Assignment early this month. A Rube Goldberg machine is a complex contraption designed to achieve a simple task. Students needed to incorporate 10 elements to their machine with a goal of squeezing toothpaste on a toothbrush.

Students in STEM class practiced sketching and reading sketches in a friendly competition. Students each created a model out of Fischer technik pieces. Then completed an orthographic sketch of the model. Next, the students traded sketches to try to build the model the other had sketched. In the end, all students got very close to replicating the model exactly. They learned that sketching needed to be very detailed and the slightest error in the drawing could create a drastically different model.

Students enrolled in Auto at the Southeast Region Career and Technical Center in Oakes are currently working on taking apart an engine to diagnose an unusual noise and fixing up the SkillsUSA raffle car.

Sargent Central Seniors participated in the 2019 Bobcat Manufacturing Day on October 10th, 2019. Manufacturing Day included an introduction to Lean Manufacturing, a Team Communication Activity, and lastly a Bobcat Factory Tour.

The idea behind Lean Manufacturing is to take on a collaborative team approach to improve performance and production and remove waste. The Seniors learned and practiced this through a Lean Manufacturing Lego Build Activity! The Team Communication Activity was done with a partner and they were to build a tower out of pipe cleaners, and by the end of it, the tower needed to support a bolt. They were put under time constraints to complete this activity, as well as a line change so to speak. With the line change, they had to move and take over the project to their right, and essentially complete someone else's tower! Lastly, the Seniors were able to tour the factory, to see how everything operates as well as to see the new Bobcat Line that is being created.

Sargent Central hosted a Financial Aid Night on October 28th, 2019. Representatives from NDSCS were on-site to discuss with students and parents about what Financial Aid is, the different financial aid programs, and lastly to assist parents and students with filling out the FAFSA.

Seniors took part in College Application Month October 15, 2019. Through this process, the Bank of North Dakota waives the application fee for students to apply to 1 college of their choice in the state of North Dakota on a date pre-determined by their school.

Virtual Reality (VR) puts a user in a virtual world to experience a variety of activities. Some of these include simulations of medical procedures and historical events, explorations of museums and zoos, walk-throughs of different occupations, and fun situations such as roller coasters and horror games. A high processing computer was recently constructed at SC to provide these opportunities for students and teachers. Staff plan to use this technology in various classes to enhance lessons.

Sargent Central’s Ethan Bergeman and Emmett Bergeman were selected for the Central-North Central American Choral Directors Association Regional Honor Choir to be held in Milwaukee, WI on March 4-7.

Students from 10 states auditioned for the honor choirs and only the finest musicians were selected. Ethan, a junior, was selected for the High School Men’s honor choir(TTBB) and Emmett, an 8th grader, was selected for the Middle School Honor Choir(SACTB).

Human Scavenger Hunt/Musical Chairs Activity. 20 participants competed against each other to quickly find a person who fit the round category. Examples of rounds included: someone wearing black, someone with glasses, someone in Cadet apparel, someone with blonde hair, etc... After 19 rounds, Ms. Schmit was the last one left "sitting."
