The Principal's Corner
Please join us on Wednesday, October 17, from 7:30-8:00 a.m. in the HCS office for coffee and bagels and an opportunity to connect and to ask general questions about HCS. We hope to see you and have a chance to answer and questions you may have.
Many thanks to the students, parents and staff who spent time planting seeds in the Spring, maintaining and then harvesting vegetables and flowers in the HCS garden. Not only has the garden space been used in conjunction with learning and science classes, it has also provided our school community and kitchen with many delicious vegetables, which we have been able to incorporate into our daily school meals! This week we picked tomatoes, basil, parsley and carrots; all great additions to our salad bar and even to pizza day!

Spotlight on Sixth Grade
The 6th grade started the 2018-2019 school year off by working to complete the Vermont State Parks Venture Vermont Outdoor Challenge (VV). We’re looking to engage students in hands-on activities that give them new and interesting experiences while also helping to build community among out staff and students. VV is a scorecard that encourages students to get outdoors, visit state parks, and learn more about our state. Students are earning points for completing activities as long as they can show photographic evidence of their accomplishment. Some are pretty basic, while others are pretty specific. When students are able to complete enough activities to earn 250 points, they can send in their scorecard and receive a free day-long entry pass to all state parks for the rest of the 2018-2019 season. We will end this challenge with a visit to Button Bay State Park in early October.
Student Assistance Program
Dear HCS Community,
Hello! My name is Lynn Camara and I am the Student Assistance Program (SAP) Counselor at Hinesburg Community School. My focus as an SAP Counselor is to be available to HCS 5th-8th graders and to offer them general support and information for a variety of issues facing young people today. I have all kinds of resources and information for folks including: lists of area clinicians, books, brochures, helpful web sites, and stress balls, among other things. Faculty, staff, students, and parents are all welcome to make a referral if they are concerned about a student and would like the student to meet with me.
I meet with students individually and in small groups, visit classrooms, and I also advise the the HCS CY LEAD (Connecting Youth Leadership Education the Anti-Drug) and GLOW (Gay, Lesbian or Whoever) groups. Both groups are open to 6th-8th graders. I am at school on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year. Please feel free to visit my office any time, give a call, or email me. Help is down the hall!
Wishing everyone a great school year,
Lynn W. Camara, MA, MA, AAP

IT'S TIME FOR THE FALL FUNDRAISER!
ORDERS DUE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12 - NEW "GET AIR" PRIZES!
This is our biggest fundraiser of the year with a goal of $8,000. All the money raised goes right back into our school in the form of grants to teachers, funding for enrichment activities, support for the school garden and other educational projects that benefit the whole school community.
To reach this goal we need a majority of students to sell at least 5 items. We encourage all families to participate. We earn up to 50% profit from all sales.
Don’t forget the power of email. We encourage you to reach out to your networks, including friends and out of town relatives, to help increase sales. Just go to genevieves.com and enter our school code 21095 to shop online and support HCS.
* If you are not interested in shopping from these catalogs, please consider writing a check directly to HCS PiE or donating on-line through the website. 100% of donations go straight to PiE. Thanks for your support!

The Viking Newsletter is published bi-weekly, when school is in session. It is available on our web site and is also delivered to email via Blackboard Connect. If needed, a hard copy can be provided for your child to bring home. The Viking includes upcoming events, after school opportunities, notes of interest for parents and the community and updates from our school administration. The deadline to submit material for the Viking is the Wednesday preceding the release date.
