News for TMS Families Week of November 22, 2021
Principal Updates
Dear Trailside Families,
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for serving such an appreciative community. The positive emails we receive each week and the appreciation demonstrated by our students and families means so much to us. This past week, it was so wonderful having so many families come out to our Awards Night. Never in the history of TMS, have we had the turnout for each grade level as we had this past week. Watching parents, grandparents, and families celebrate our students' achievement was a highlight for us. I love seeing the photos being taken with Timber! Making memories one day at a time.
Thank you for your continued support of our commitment to provide a safe and caring learning environment for our students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Beichler
ORANGE OUT MONDAY---TMS --NO PLACE FOR HATE
School Spirit Day Tuesday: Western/Plaid Day
Winter Warmth Coat Drive November 22-December 10th
Just six to ten miles from where we live, there are hundreds of young children going to school without a coat. The children do not have winter warm coats to keep them warm during the cold, brisk Winter months. For the past four years, TMS has partnered with Guilford Elementary school in pairing every child with either a new or gently used coat for the Winter. Please consider donating this year. We are accepting winter coats/jackets from toddler to adult medium. Please drop them off at the boxes/containers in front of the school.
We will be collecting donations from November 22nd through December 10th. All items donated will be new, gently used, and clean. We will be requesting adult, youth, and children's sizes.

We will be hosting a nonperishable food drive from November 29-December 10th. There will be 4 donation boxes (one in each house office and one in the main office) where students can bring in donations.
Acceptable donations include the following nonperishable food items:
- canned fruits and vegetables
- canned or bagged beans
- canned soups and microwavable cups of soup
- peanut butter and jelly
- pasta and sauce
- rice
- any spices
- chicken and beef broth
- mac and cheese
- snack items
- granola bars
- cereal
- condiments, such as mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard
- canned chicken breast and tuna fish
Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab Collection: Supported by the Student Council Association
The Ronald McDonald House Charities has had a longstanding program of collecting the pop tabs off of canned items, such as beverage cans, canned fruits/vegetables, canned soups, and canned pet foods, which they then recycle. The proceeds are used to support programs to ease the hardship of childhood illness on both children and their families. Pop tabs are easy to collect and store and are less messy than collecting entire cans. Oddly enough, there is more concentrated aluminum in the pop tabs than in the cans themselves (weird, but true!), so the charity can receive more money for something a lot smaller!
Please help us to collect the little pull tabs that we typically recycle or throw away. They are so valuable to the guest families at the Ronald McDonald Houses. This is an ongoing service project and Pop Tab Donation locations are in front of each house office. Holiday get-togethers are a great time to start collecting for us! We thank you in advance!

Compass & SEL Learning
Part of our TMS culture is to foster positive relationships between students and adults and to create a culture of inclusion and kindness. One of the ways that we address this is through our advisory period, or what we call Compass. During this time, students participate in various activities and lessons that cover multiple topics. For example, a typical week looks like:
Monday - Mindset Monday
Tuesday - No Place for Hate/Second Step Lessons
Wednesday - No Place for Hate/Second Step Lessons
Thursday - Literacy Read Aloud
Friday - Team Builder Fridays
In years past teachers across all departments have contributed different lessons to address social emotional needs, character traits, and academic skills. This year, Trailside is fortunate to implement the Second Step Curriculum. Through this curriculum, students will have the opportunity to reflect and practice self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Over the next couple of weeks we will share talking points that can be discussed with your students as we support them in their social emotional learning.
