CSD Top 3
Your monthly school district newsletter
Tuesday, April 4
Dear Canby Families,
We are so excited to have students back at school for some great learning over the next couple of months! Thank you for supporting your students. Please check out the Top 3 below on a fun foodie contest, reading mentors in our schools, and important events happening this month – starting tonight!
Knight Student Wins Local Future Chef Contest
Some foodie fun came to Canby School District as the Nutrition Services Department hosted the Future Chefs National Challenge by Sodexo. That day also happened to be challenge winner Natalie Burgon’s birthday!
The call was for students in 4th through 6th grades to “complete the plate” with their favorite fruit or vegetable side dish. Students had submitted their recipes by the due date, and ten finalists were selected to compete in the competition at Canby High School. Those finalists were Ava Harrison from Carus, Annabelle Wilson from Lee, Harper Hill from Ninety-One, Samantha Swilley from Knight, Charlotte Crum from Eccles, Natalie Burgon from Knight, Aretta Stoddart from Lee, Aubrey Bean from Knight, McKenna Apken from Eccles, and Caroline Jacobsen from Knight (who was unable to participate that day).
With their new aprons and chef hats on, the students prepared their dishes before enjoying a lunch break with their families. Then the judges scored the students based on their speaking, food presentation, taste, and more. The students produced a variety of dishes from fruit salad and cream corn to orzo veggie soup and Thai spring rolls.
Ultimately, Natalie came out on top with her “Shockingly Good Cauliflower Nachos.” She won a medal and prizes including a black chef hat, cookware, a Fitbit, and more. She will go on to have a chance at becoming the national winner.
Congratulations, Natalie!
Reading Mentors are Twinning!
With the launch of Reading Mentors in three schools (Eccles, Carus, and Ninety-One), the program is now running in all of Canby’s elementary schools. Reading Mentors is a program of The Canby Center, providing students one-on-one reading time with caring adult volunteers.
Recently on a reading day, mentors learned it was “Twin Day” at Lee. So, the mentors opted to participate! According to The Canby Center, “These folks are just so happy to be a part of team CSD!”
