Waikīkī School Parent Bulletin - March 6, 2023
Congratulations Teacher of the Year Natalia Sandoval!
Congratulations to our amazing Special Eduction Preschool teacher Natalia Sandoval (M.A.SpEd, NBCT) who was recently recognized at the National Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) Convention in Louisville, Kentucky as a Unit Teacher of the Year! Not only is Natalia a fabulous Special Education Preschool Teacher at Waikiki School, she is also an Adjunct Professor in the College of Education at Hawaii Pacific University. Additionally, she also serves on the Board of Directors for the Hawaii Chapter of the Council of Exceptional Children, a fantastic organization that organizes events, programs and professional development opportunities for Hawaii CEC members.
Ms. Sandoval continues to shine as a national advocate on behalf of special education teachers everywhere having been recently interviewed for a national story featured in a recent USA Today article.
We are all so very proud of Natalia and extend our most heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved award.
Summer Learning Hub at Waikiki School
We know many of you are trying to plan for this summer, including trips, summer school, and other summer programs. We wanted to share an update to give you insight on how we will run our summer program this year.
This year we will hold a Summer Hub Learning Program (just like last year) for CURRENT Waikiki School Kindergarten - Current 4th Grade Students ONLY.
This is a federally-funded program and has strict guidelines for participation, including required attendance by any registered participant. Waikiki School must follow these guidelines.
A Summer Hub is designed to provide selected students with the skills needed to attain proficiency in language arts and math. The federal funding that supports this program requires that it be geared to serve our most at risk learners in ELA, Math, and Social Emotional Learning.
Students will be identified by the school based on current report card progress marks along with input from their homeroom teacher.
Tentative Summer Learning Hub Dates are June 5 - June 30 with a program run time of 8am - 12pm
We will have two (2) phases of registration.
For phase one, selected students will be notified via letter and email on or around March 21, 2023. There will be a strict deadline to return your acceptance letter/registration as we anticipate a waitlist. All details will be in your child's acceptance letter IF your child is selected for this year's Summer Hub Program.
Phase two registration information will come at a later date.
New this summer will be an A+ program (at a cost to families) with a run time of 12:00pm - 4:00pm. Space will be LIMITED for the A+ program based on staffing.
We know many families have inquired about our past fee-based Mindful Summer School, but for this year, we will be putting that program on hold and continue with the federally-funded opportunity.
Managing Impulsivity - March's Habit of the Month
Thinking before acting; remaining calm; being thoughtful and deliberate. What Habit of Mind is Waikīkī School focusing on this month? You guessed it! Managing Impulsivity.
Many of us, especially when we are young, tend to be impulsive. We sometimes react immediately, rush, or act without thinking about what might happen. This can get us into trouble or lead us to make unwise decisions.
Managing Impulsivity is just the opposite of this tendency. It is to slow down. It is, perhaps by taking a big breath, to take a pause. It is to take some time to appreciate all of the nuances and complexities of a situation and also to give thought to the possible consequences of one's actions.
