Shoshone School District Reopening

Just a quick update on the Shoshone School Districts plan for school in the fall. In person instruction will start as scheduled on August 18th for the MS/HS and on the 19th for the elementary, provided Statewide government officials do not prevent us from doing so.

Our plan to minimize the small risk for children and staff is to take some common sense precautions based on science. We will modify the physical layout of classrooms to provide for more distance, stagger schedules/routes to prevent larger groups from congregating, increase hygiene teaching, and other best practice measures. Masks will be allowed. Because it is generally accepted that spread from adult to adult is more common, we will change some patterns for adults while on school grounds.

The State Board recently proclaimed that the “default” is school will open as scheduled, meaning no need for special permission to open. Of course, as we have seen before, this could change.

Even though it is the default, we still have deliberately and thoroughly gathered and reviewed the data to ensure that we have the best handle possible on the situation. We do have several months of data now, as well as information from the about 30 countries that once shut down schools for a period of time and are now reopened.

We have been asked “what will you tell parents and staff that are afraid of going back to school?” The answer is we trust the decision making abilities of our local citizens. We will share information, precautions we are taking, and answer questions people have. Once we share that information, it is a parental decision to make. As an institution, we have to make decisions based on the group, but as a parent you are under no such responsibility. Our school district greatly respects parent’s ability to make decisions best for their family.

We repeat what we said in the spring: “the bottom line is we all have deep respect for the right of parental decision making in these types of situations. We strongly encourage all parents to carefully consider what is best for your children. If you come to the conclusion it is best for your children to stay away from school, we fully support that decision!”

The most important part of our mission and clearly our first priority, is our students. Are students in danger? With that in mind, here is some data for you to consider:

There are about 56 million kids in US public schools. So far, less than 20 school age children have died with Covid, and all had other serious medical conditions. (CDC)

About 56,000 school age children have tested positive so far, and the hospitalization rate for those is about .01%, and that is rounded up. (CDC)

We have also looked at the data of the effect on children if they are not in school, and I can assure you the risks are tremendous. The reality is many students will start the 2020-2021 year with a whole grade level of lost learning, dropouts have skyrocketed nationwide and a large percentage of students did not participate in education last spring. Beyond the educational ramifications of closing are the so called depression diseases; accidents, suicide, drugs, and homicide. These are the leading causes of death for school age children, all of which are increasing during this lock-down. The preponderance of the evidence is continuing to shut down physical teaching would be a disaster of generational proportions for our children.

That having been said, we take Covid very seriously, it is real and dangers do exist. We just have to weigh the dangers of Covid vs. the dangers of continuing to keep school closed and have concluded opening Shoshone Schools is best. It’s safer to reopen. But again, that is for the group not the individual. If you as an individual family decides given your situation you would be best not attending, we can accommodate that as well.

This is the update for now. Of course, things change rapidly, but as of now school will start the week of August 18th.
