I hope this email finds you in the GREEN zone...calm, focused and relaxed. As promised, I wanted to share some visuals and tools for the next step on the Road to Regulation. For example, if you find yourself in the BLUE zone (sleepy, bored, etc.) you may need to stretch or do some jumping jacks to wake up your brain and body. A brisk walk outside in the sun can do wonders! If you are in the YELLOW zone (anxious, silly, etc.) maybe some deep breaths or yoga may do the trick. RED zone (angry, out of control, etc.) means you may have to take a run, brisk walk or do heavy work to tap into that extra energy or perhaps journaling or listening to music would help.
Reminder, there are NO BAD ZONES. According to Emily LaShorne Walz, Implementation Specialist at The Zones of Regulation - "The goal of the Zones of Regulation is to emphasize that when we are dysregulated, we don’t need to change Zones, we need to regulate within, manage, or take care of our Zone. This allows us to honor our authentic feelings while meeting the demands of the environment around us, helping us to accomplish our goals, and supporting our well-being."
Consider using some of these phrases with your child:
- “Let’s use a tool to take care of our Zones.”
- “I wonder if a tool might help us manage our Zones right now?”
- “I need a tool to regulate my Zone, how about you?”
- “What Zone are you in? Is there a tool that might help?”
With Peace, Love, and Gratitude,
Ms. O'Connor
