New High School Schedule Update
Following several months of team work, involving input from parents, students, teachers and high school staff, district leadership has selected a new high school schedule.
Beginning in fall 2023, 4J high schools will operate on a 2 semester x 4 class A/B/C day schedule. This means that there will be two semesters with eight classes per semester. Four classes will be held twice a week on alternating days (A/B), with a shorter, flexible schedule (C) on early release day.
We understand that this configuration may be confusing at first as we adjust to a new system. Please bear with us! No one schedule is the definitive solution to student success, but we are excited about the opportunities this new schedule provides to meet the goals of our schools and needs of our students.
More information about the new schedule details, such as class length, course offerings, and which days will follow an A, B or C school schedule, will be announced as decisions are made.
State Invites Comments on Waiver to Reduce Testing
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is inviting public comment on a proposal to reduce state testing during the 2023–24 school year.
ODE proposes to seek a federal waiver so it can reconfigure and reduce the test length for the English language arts and mathematics state assessments conducted in 2024. The waiver would not cancel state testing in 2024 or later, but would allow ODE to comply with the new state law requiring schools to minimize state testing.
Comments can be emailed to ODE.WaiverFeedback@ode.oregon.gov. The deadline to comment is December 31.
School Choice Season Is Coming in January
To be included in the school choice lottery, 4J residents must apply between January 1–31. Non-district residents apply later, March 1–31.
Families are invited to explore their school choice options, including their neighborhood school, during the January school choice period. All 4J schools will hold a virtual and an in-person visit in January. There also will be two virtual information sessions—one in English on Jan. 10 and the other in Spanish on Jan. 12—where families learn more about 4J's school choice process.
Wishing you a warm and wonderful winter break!
Schools are closed starting Monday, Dec. 19 and will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 4. 4J district offices remain open during winter break, except for December 23 and 26, and January 2. We look forward to seeing you again in 2023!
Child Feeling Under the Weather? Keep Them Home
With the arrival of winter and illness circulating in our community, we also often see more students getting sick. As a reminder, please keep your child home if you see signs of illness, such as a fever greater than 100.4 degrees, vomiting, diarrhea, or serious, sustained cough. Current COVID-19 symptoms often are mild and similar to cold or allergy symptoms.
Thank you for doing your part to help keep our student and staff community as healthy as possible during the cold winter months!
