Salem Junior General Monthly Newsletter- January 2024
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! We trust you had a wonderful holiday season filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished moments.
As we embrace the start of the New Year, we want to remind you that school will resume on January 2nd. We are excited and eagerly looking forward to welcoming back our motivated and enthusiastic students as we embark on a fresh semester of learning, growth, and exploration together.
To continue fostering a successful partnership between home and school, here are some important ways we can collaborate:
1. Attendance: Please make every effort to ensure your child attends school regularly and punctually. Consistent attendance plays a crucial role in your child's academic progress. Click here for 10 facts about School Attendance.
2. Read with Your Child: Encourage the love of reading by spending time reading together at home. It's a wonderful way to bond, expand vocabulary, and ignite a passion for stories and knowledge. Click here to learn additional benefits to reading with your child.
3. Encourage Sharing: Encourage your child to share what they've learned with their classmates. Sharing not only reinforces their own understanding but also fosters a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.
4. Ask Questions: Encourage your child to ask questions when they encounter confusion or curiosity. Questions are a pathway to understanding and critical thinking.
We believe that when families and schools work together, our students can achieve their fullest potential. Your involvement and support make a significant difference in your child's educational journey.
Thank you for being valued partners in your child's education.
Monthly Character Trait for January
Character traits are valuable qualities that shape a person's behavior and personality. Each month, our elementary students are introduced to a new character trait, which is discussed during morning announcements and explored in the classroom.
For the month of January, we are focusing on the character trait of "Self-control."
Self-control means having the ability to manage yourself, especially in challenging situations. It's about making the right choices even when you may not feel like it. Self-control is all about working hard to control your emotions, the words you use, the actions you take, and those impulses that can sometimes get the best of us.
We encourage you to engage in discussions about self-control with your child at home. Share your own experiences with self-control. Together, let's help our children develop this important trait that will serve them well throughout their lives.
Thank you for your support in fostering these character traits in our students.

Late Arrival to School
Late Arrival:
Please be advised that any student arriving after 8AM is considered tardy. All late arrivals of elementary students must be signed in by a parent or guardian at the main office.
We understand that unforeseen circumstances can occasionally cause delays. However, for the smooth functioning of our school and to ensure minimal disruptions, we kindly request your support in ensuring your child arrives on time.
Early Dismissals: Procedure for Grades PreK-6
If a student in grades PreK-6 needs an early departure from school:
- A written note must be submitted to the classroom teacher in advance.
- The parent or guardian is then required to personally visit the elementary office to sign their child out. Reason for the early departure must be written on the sign out sheet along with the parent's signature.
Your child's safety is of paramount importance to us, and these protocols are in place to ensure that. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to these guidelines.
From the Nurse's Office
New York State law requires that any medication to be administered in a school setting, including over-the-counter medications, must have appropriate documentation from a physician. The law also provides guidelines for the administration of medication in schools to ensure the safety of students.
For the safety and well-being of all our students, we would like to remind everyone that any and all medications that require a doctor's script must be delivered directly to the health office by a parent or guardian. It's essential that medications are not sent with students or through others. This ensures the correct handling, dosage, and administration of the medication.
We understand the challenges and inconveniences that might arise from this, but the safety of our students remains our utmost priority. If you have questions or need to make specific arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact the health office.
🔔 Elementary School Arrival Information 🔔
The elementary school doors open at 7:50 a.m. Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. We want to ensure that everyone has a smooth start to their day.
For parent drop-off, please use the designated area in front of the school. Students and their families should not be walking between our parked buses. It is not safe walking from the parking lot and along the buses to get to our elementary doors. Please help our drivers by approaching the buildings from the front of the school.
Punctuality is important. Students who enter the building after 8:00 a.m. will be considered tardy. Let's all work together to ensure everyone gets the most out of their learning time.
📣 Elementary School Dismissal Information 📣
Dismissal for all walkers and parent pick-ups will take place at 2:20-2:30 p.m. Please make sure to be on time so we can efficiently reunite you with your child(ren).
To facilitate a smooth dismissal process, we kindly ask that you wait in the designated area, on the front lawn, for pick-up.
We appreciate your cooperation and patience during dismissal. Safety is our top priority, and your assistance in adhering to our procedures contributes to a secure and efficient process.
Remember, clear communication and adherence to these dismissal procedures help us maintain a safe and organized environment for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact our school office.
