Daysland Digest
December 13, 2023
Principal's Corner
It is hard to believe this is the final newsletter of 2023. We have lots to look forward to as we wrap up the year. Our Christmas Concert is tomorrow, and we host two shows. The dress rehearsal is at 1:00 pm and the evening performance at 7:00 pm. The evening show will be live-streamed on our YouTube Channel. An extra special thank you to Mrs. Tanton and Mrs. McKay for their work on the Christmas Concert. Preparing for the concert is a big job, and we are very grateful for their time and effort.
We are also excited for our Christmas Dinner that is on December 19th. This is one of my favorite school events. We will have our students eat in their cross-graded squads. We want to thank our parent volunteers who donated food items and who are coming in to prepare and serve our students and staff that day. Please know that you are appreciated!
Even though many activities are happening, it is important to remind students to focus on their schoolwork. This is especially important for our Grade 9-12 students returning to PATs, diploma and final exams in January. An exam calendar is included in the newsletter. For our younger students, we appreciate any opportunity to support literacy and numeracy skills at home over the holidays. This can include reading a book or playing family games involving numeracy skills.
We have some staffing news to share. Mrs. Schlaut will be returning to her role as our Grade Two teacher. We have missed her and are thankful to have her back on the team. Mrs. Tucker has been replacing Mrs. Schlaut these past few months, and we are so glad she did. She stepped in on short notice and put in tremendous work for our Grade Two class. We cannot thank her enough. We will have one final staffing update to share early next week with news of who will be taking over the Grade Five position that became available due to Mr. Gratrix accepting a position at Killam School.
As we wrap up this calendar year, we wish our entire school community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We look forward to working with and serving you in 2024.

(ii) School Generated Funds Report – Wes reviewed SGF report dated August 31. 2023.
b) Room Reps:
Kindergarten (submitted by Chantelle Hayes): Mrs Tanton - We are living our best life in Kindergarten. I have a lovely bunch of 17 busy little coconuts who are more than ready to be in Kindergarten. We have learned 11 letters so far and we've covered numbers 1-10. We have begun the process of sounding out CVC words. It's so neat to see their eyes get big as they uncover the mystery of reading, the wheels are turning! It's a HUGE AHA moment for them! On Friday we are hosting our annual Kindergarten Grandparents Day at the school. Our Grandparents will enjoy 5 different centers with their grandbaby and relish the one on one time with each other. We have been making Witches Brew in Kindergarten on the daily and I have been turned into a toad multiple times with their magic spells and rhymes, I always put in a request to be turned into a millionaire but oh well... Toad it is! I wish you all warm toes and noses, it's fairly chilly out there these days.
Grade 1 (submitted by Laura Zwack): Mrs Reber - The Gr.1 class is embracing everything spooky and impatiently waiting for Halloween. In ELA we just finished up making our coffee filter monsters and writing about the detail our monster consisted of. Gr.1's have started their home reading program and are off to a great start. During our reading time, we are working on reading stories with CVC words and irregular words (words we just know). Today's story was all about Wes the big hog (we were sad Mrs.Wilson wasn't here to enjoy the story). In Math, we made place-value pumpkins! We are also tackling our numbers to 20 while working on skip-counting by 2's. In science, we finished up our pumpkin week! Pumpkin week ties into learning about plants! We learned the life cycle of a pumpkin, and the 5 senses and talked about the needs of a pumpkin. Students enjoyed making pumpkin slime, baking pumpkin seeds to eat, and estimating how many seeds would be in their group's pumpkin.
Grade 2 (submitted by Kristie Nahajowich): Mrs Tucker - We have had a great start to the school year! In Language Arts we are focusing on our reading and writing skills. We read a new story every day, and the week’s booklets are sent home every Friday. Writing complete sentences has been the focus of our writing so far this year. In Math, we are working on numbers from 0-1000, counting forwards and backwards, skip counting, and place value. Science has been focused on materials and their properties. Right now we are beginning to do some hands-on activities and demonstrations to explore the properties of materials. The first unit of Social is about our community. We have learned about the different types of communities and what we can find there. Currently we are mapping and have learned what a compass rose is and how to remember cardinal directions.
Grade 3 (submitted by Alison Eshpeter): Mrs Schmidt-Tiegen - In ELA this week we are reviewing long vowel teams again and using what we know about them, as well as syllables, to read bigger words. We are finishing up our descriptive writing Haunted House Listings. At the end of the week, for some fun, we will go to the makerspace and create our own haunted houses based on our writing. We have one last government assessment to do and that is the HLAT--a 45 minute writing assessment based on a writing prompt given to us. Students will complete this assessment on Wednesday. In Math we are moving on from comparing and ordering numbers to finding the number that is ten more/ten less and 100 more/100 less than a given number. We will also be learning to round a number to the nearest 10 and 100.Looking ahead to Halloween, our party will start shortly after lunch with a costume tour at Providence Place. More information will be coming home about that tomorrow, from the school. For our classroom party, your child is welcome to bring a special snack for themselves. A small treat will be provided by me. Mr Wilson - In Science we are learning about Earth Science. We have been learning about the layers of the earth and the Earth's plates and how they cause things like earthquakes, volcanos and mountains. In Social, we just finished our mapping unit. The class was amazing at identifying the continents and oceans. They also learned how to use cardinal directions to find locations on a map. We are now going to learn more about four different countries, including Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India. This is a group of fantastic students and we are able to learn a lot while having some fun along the way.
Grade 4 (submitted by Kirby Schmidt-Teigen): Miss Hallback - My ELA and Math group are working on very similar things as Mrs. Thomas's group. In ELA, we just wrapped up writing descriptive paragraphs about the monsters the students created. We have also started buddy reading within our ELA group. In math, we finished our statistics unit and we are about half way through our decimals unit. In Science, students are learning about waste in our world. They are very excited about our class composter. In the near future, we will be using the compost created to plant a classsroom plant. In Social, we are learning about the 6 different regions of Alberta. Students have just started creating either a brochure or a google slides ebook to showcase what they know about the 3 regions (Canadian Shield, Boreal Forest, Parkland) we have learned thus far. Mrs. Thomas - My half of the ELA/Math group is working on very similar things to Miss Hallback's. We are busy working on our writing skills in ELA and reading The One and Only Ivan as a read aloud. In Math, we are in the middle of our decimals unit where kids are learning to name and compare decimals and getting ready to move on to rounding and then working with money. We are all looking forward to Halloween activities next week and going up to Providence Place to show off their costumes!
Grade 5 (submitted by Laura Zwack): Mr Gratrix - The grade 5 class has wrapped up their math unit on place value and decimals. We move into addition and subtraction next. In ELA after completing our novel study we are working on developing our writing skills. Mr Kerslake - Currently, the grade 5s are working on finishing their mapping unit in social studies. In science, the students have been looking at various parts of the weather. They have been working on looking at different weather tools and have made a few to test wind speed and direction. They are currently looking at different clouds and cloud types to determine what kind of weather will be forming throughout the day.
Grade 6 (submitted by Cristin Zimmer): Mrs McKay - Everything is great in grade 6! In ELA, we are wrapping up our realistic fiction book clubs and will be completing final projects next week. In Math, we have finished our integers unit and are onto multiplication and division, including decimals. We are learning about climate change in Science, and in Social Studies, we just finished projects on the regions of Alberta. One more exciting thing is that we will be welcoming another new student very soon! This brings the grade 6 class to a total 16 students, up from 12 at the end of last year.
Grade 7/8 (submitted by Alison Eshpeter): Mrs McKay - Math: Both grades are wrapping up their fractions units. Grade 7 will write their test this week and grade 8 will write their test next week. We are right on track with our year plans! Mrs V Zimmer - In Social, we are all learning to appreciate the Renaissance! And in ELA 7, we are enjoying our first novel study of "The Barren Grounds" by David A. Robertson, where the characters just discovered a secret portal to a cold, dangerous wilderness! Mrs Thomas - In Home Ec, the grade 7s and 8s have been taking advantage of all the fresh garden tomatoes and a variety of other fresh produce to make roasted pasta sauce and their own pizza sauce that we used to make pasta dishes and homemade pizzas. We have a freezer full of the extra sauces to use in future products!
Grade 9 (submitted by Carrie Carrier): Mrs Tobler - The Gr 9s will be participating in Take Your Kid To Work Day on Thursday, Nov 2. Students have received permission forms that detail all the information. Mr Gratrix - In Math the grade 9's are completing their unit on Linear Relations. Mrs Thomas - I’m Home ec the Grade 9s have been working on making quick and easy dinner foods. Recently, they have made pizza, shepherds (cottage) pie, and turkey pot pie.
Grade 10 (submitted by Teena Kasha): Mrs Walker - Grade 10s are working through a new unit in Math 10 on relations and functions. Now that the first unit is complete, students are encouraged to review any materials they struggled with and come see for additional help or to arrange for rewrites.
Grade 11 (submitted by Jeanni Hoermann): All is well.
Grade 12 (submitted by Candice Guhle): Mrs. V. Zimmer - We're approaching the half-way point of our independent choice novel study. By choosing the novels they study, they are interested in the content and more invested in the success of their comprehension. It's gong well! Mrs. Walker - Grade 12s are keeping on track in Math 30 and Chem 20 so far. In Chemistry, we started our Solutions, Acids and Bases unit, so we'll be completing some interesting labs in the next few weeks.

10.AERR School Results and Growth Plan
b) Room Reps:
Kindergarten (submitted by Chantelle Hayes): Mrs Tanton – We’re just chugging along in Kindergarten. We had our annual Grandparents Day on Friday Oct. 27 and it was a hit! The Kinders gave their grandparents massages, they read to together, painted pumpkins, made a craft and enjoyed sensory bins together. We wrapped the event up with a few action songs that our grandparents boogied to with us :-)
In numeracy we covered learning our numbers from 1-10, we’ve been doing lots of counting, forwards and backwards and we’ve just begun our 2D shapes unit.
In literacy we’ve learned half the letters of the alphabet and we’ve been learning about capitals and periods, which are currently sounded out as “toot” sounds when we read our morning message. The sillier the better, it seems to stick!
We have the grade 6’s coming to our room on Friday to help us make count down chains to Christmas, patterning will also be a hot topic during this project.
One of our greatest successes this year is their printing! Boy, are they great little printers and they mean business! They’re really great at self reflection, and most of them are really driven to always do their very best and to print their letters starting from the top, always!! This is gospel in our room!
There’s no doubt I have the sweetest of hearts in my class!
Grade 1 (submitted by Laura Zwack): Mrs Reber - The Gr.1's came back from break ready to continue learning! It's a wonderful time of the year when students' reading starts to become fluent and they start to phonetically spell. Best of all, they become confident in their abilities! In Science, we are learning scientific methods. We discussed wonders this week. What do you wonder? We had some great answers from “Why do stars glow?” “Why do we have shadows?” Today, we completed our mystery box challenge. Students had to ask questions, make predictions, use their five senses, and guess what was in the box! After the big guess of gummy worms, we made our conclusion that this was indeed what was in the box. Then, we enjoyed our yummy reward! In ELA, students have mastered their short vowels and are starting to focus on digraphs. We have solved eight secret stories already to help us improve our writing and reading skills. In math, we are talking all about Gus the Plus and working on our addition facts to 20! Next week, we will be starting everything Christmas in our classroom! FALALALA!
Grade 2 (submitted by Kristie Nahajowich): Mrs Tucker – The grade 2s have continued to do amazing work. We have written stories about Jack o’ Lanterns that came to life, and we just finished writing about what is so great about being a kid. Weekly spelling tests are starting this Friday, which are connected to the daily reading work sent home. In Math we are now learning how to expand numbers, as well as write them in different ways. We have finished most of our Science unit and will be wrapping up Materials and Properties in the next week. We will have a Social test on Friday about community. Scholastic book orders and permission forms for the Remembrance Day poster contest will be out by Friday.
Grade 3 (submitted by Alison Eshpeter): Mrs Schmidt-Tiegen – In ELA before the break, our phonics pattern was /ea/ like in the words head, heavy, meant, etc. as well as /a/ when it makes the short o sound, like in the words water, watch, waddle, etc. We are moving on to opinion writing and we will also be presenting our Remembrance Day Posters to the class, highlighting why we chose to draw what we did and what we hope our viewers think and feel when they look at our posters. In math we will practice our money counting skills by playing a big game of store in the classroom. Mr Wilson – In Social we have started learning about the four countries we cover in this class. They are Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India. We are using Social Circle roles to learn about the different countries. These roles help the students look at the countries through different lenses. So far, we have learned the Reporter Role, where we report facts about life in one of the countries. We recently learned the
Connector Role where students learned to connect ways of living in other countries to life in Canada.
In Science, we have been focused on mountains. We recently used the Chromebooks to create
diagrams illustrating how mountains are formed. We are going to turn our attention specifically to the Rocky Mountains this week. Mr Pastachak – In Art, we have been learning the techniques associated with watercolour, having painted flowers in September, and pumpkins in October. We are getting quite good at this! Grade 3 students are now learning how to draw a winter landscape with the idea of painting a watercolour background afterwards.
Grade 4 (submitted by Kirby Schmidt-Tiegen): Miss Halback - In Math, we have also wrapped up our unit on place value and are moving into adding and subtracting numbers including decimals. In ELA, we have started learning about the different types of figurative language and how we can apply them to our writing. In Science we will be starting to learn about the 3 R’s (reduce, recycle and reuse) and how we can apply them to our daily life to minimize waste in our world. The kids have just finished learning about the different regions of Alberta in Social. They are now working on a brochure or a google slides presentation to share what they have learned. Mrs Thomas - In Math, we have just wrapped up our unit on Place Value, including decimals and are moving into adding and subtracting numbers, also including decimals. In ELA, we are nearly done our read aloud of "The One and Only Ivan" and have started working on some Morphology lessons, where we look at root words and how they are changed by adding prefixes and suffixes.
Grade 5 (submitted by Laura Zwack): Mr Gratrix - In Math we are finishing up adding and subtracting, specifically working with money. In ELA we are working on writing paragraphs which will quickly lead into writing larger pieces with a continuous theme throughout each paragraph. Mr Kerslake - The students have just completed their mapping unit in Social and their weather unit in Science. They are now moving on to new topics in each. For social they are going to be looking more in-depth at the various geographic regions in Canada (Canadian Shield, Interior Plains, Arctic, etc.). In Science, the students are going to be starting on Electricity and Circuits. This will be a hands-on opportunity to learn about how electricity works in everything from powering our wall outlets to battery-operated devices.
Grade 6 (submitted by Cristin Zimmer): Mrs McKay - Everything is great in grade 6. In ELA, we are finishing up Remembrance Day poems to submit to the legion contest. In Math, we are multiplying decimals and will move on to dividing decimals on Friday. In Science, we are almost finished our unit on Climate Change. In the next few weeks, we will be busy preparing for the Christmas concert!
Grade 7/8 (submitted by Alison Eshpeter): Mrs McKay - In Math 7 & 8, we are into our third unit of the year. For grade 7 it's Fractions, Decimals and Percents, and for grade 8, it's Percent, Ratio and Rate. These units should take us up to the Christmas break. Mr Pastachak - In Science 7/8 we have just finished our first Unit (Cells and Systems) and are starting Light and Optics from now until after Christmas Break. In English 8, students have also finished looking at a variety of suspenseful short stories and writing their own. We are now starting a new english unit focusing on research and formulating an argument. This unit looks at contact sports with the main focus being, "are they worth the risk?". We will work on this unit until Christmas Break. Mrs V Zimmer – No ELA update. Mrs Thomas – Cooking in Home Ec is wrapping up.
Grade 9 (submitted by Carrie Carrier): Mrs Tobler – No ELA update. Mr Gratrix – In Math, Grade 9's are wrapping up their 5th unit of the year this week. That means we are over half way through the semester. Mrs Thomas - In Home Ec, the grade 9s have wrapped up their cooking unit, making some delicious soups as their final lab, and are moving into sewing!
Grade 10 (submitted by Teena Kasha): All is well.
Grade 11 (submitted by Jeanni Hoermann): All is well.
Grade 12 (submitted by Candice Guhle): Mrs Zimmer - We recently wrapped up our independent novel study and are now moving on to multi-genre studies focusing on interactions between characters and the lessons we learn from others. Mrs Walker - For Grade 12s, we are moving right on time with our schedule for Math and Chem. A reminder though that with the cold weather approaching, if we have days where there are no buses, we will have online lessons though Google Meets so we stay on track (especially for Math 30).
VII. Business arising from minutes: None
VIII. New Business:
a) School supply ordering – Mr Wilson asked if there is a desire for the school to organize school supply orders. There is no minimum number of orders to use the service.General feeling is that it is a nice service to offer if minimal work required from admin assistants. Mr. Wilson will determine if service is easily feasible.
