LASD Virtual School Update
Phase One of LASD's Virtual School
Thanks to our incredible teachers and their amazing work, our LASD Virtual School launched on March 20--just seven days after we followed the recommendation of the Santa Clara County Public Health Department to close our campuses to students and staff.
Phase One of our Virtual School has focused on new learning in core subjects, especially at the elementary school level. Much of the learning has been "asynchronous" via video to account for the varied schedules of our students and their parents as we adjust to remote learning. Live support has been available for students requiring targeted instruction or additional support. Teaching specialists and instructors are providing additional content for students in PE, music, art and more.
Even more important, our IT Department provided devices and hotspots to any students requiring this technology to access our Virtual School. We're pleased to report that Phase One has been very successful, with an amazing daily student attendance rate of 99%! We have also been distributing lunches to families at two locations, Egan and Klein Park, to ensure that students who rely on school lunches continue to receive them.
Virtual School Phase 2
Now that we know we will be in a distance learning program through the end of the school year, our teachers and administrators are moving into Phase 2 of our Virtual School. Our next steps include:
Identifying priority learning for the remainder of the year
Improving the quality of instructional video lessons
Improving the quality and increase the quantity of live interactions
Better organize Google Classrooms for students
Develop a plan for the start of the 2020-21 school year to understand and address gaps in learning and social-emotional and mental health
Special Education in Virtual School
Students with IEPs are continuing to receive services in Virtual School and IEP meetings are continuing to the best extent possible. IEP teams are assessing students and ensuring they continue to make progress towards goals. Another top priority is supporting our students' executive functioning skills, self-advocacy and motivation in this unusual distance learning environment. Teachers and specialists are innovating to find the best ways to continue connecting with students and ensuring they stay on track, including videos, worksheets and one-on-one virtual meetings.
Looking Forward
As our school sites will remain closed to staff and students through June 10, we're working on logistics related to the end of the school year and looking forward to the 2020-21 school year. We will continue to keep our community informed.

Financial Update
Mr. Kenyon, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, presented information regarding the uncertainties associated with the economy and the future of school funding. Property tax revenues, state budget issues, stock market volatility and federal and state aid are all unknowns that could impact the district's finances in the future. The district will also experience some financial losses in the 2019-20 school year in addition to some cost-savings due to a reduction in the services the district no longer requires. The district submitted its "request for public assistance" to FEMA ahead of the deadline to ensure it is eligible for any available relief. The state is providing limited financial assistance to LASD to offset costs associated with COVID-19 costs. Mr. Kenyon stressed that at this time, there are still many unknowns. He recommended that the board be conservative in development of next year’s budget, as prompt action was crucial in previous recessions.

Updated School Safety Plans
Our schools review and update their safety plans on an annual basis and make any required changes, which this year includes a pandemic response plan. The safety plans help ensure a safe and orderly environment on a day-to-day basis and address bullying and student mental health. Each plan is intended to be a vehicle to build a school-wide understanding of the policies, goals and plans for a safe school environment for students and staff, creating community buy-in and a culture of partnership in student safety and well-being.
The Board unanimously approved all nine school site safety plans at its meeting. To review the presentation and safety plan for each school, please review item B.3. on our agenda online.
Board Meeting Schedule for the 2019-20 School Year
