Welcome Back!
Happy Summer Horning Families!
As the days tick by we are getting closer and closer to the start of the 2022-23 school year. There are sure to be mixed emotions as the summer draws to the end, as is the case with my own soon to be 7th grade son. I am very much looking forward to meeting each and every one of you in the coming weeks and months. As the new Principal, I am honored and excited to be part of the Horning Middle School learning community.
Near the end of this newsletter you will find short bios of our amazing new staff. In the sprit of introductions, a little about myself. For the last three years I was principal at East Troy High School, and before that I was at West Allis Central for 12 years; six as Academic Dean and six as a Special Education teacher. I attended UW Stevens Point and studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland for two semesters. My absolute passion is drawing. My son is going into 7th grade which is a first for my family, so I am right there with many of you as this is new to me too.
The back to school guide above has many important links that will help you navigate the start of the upcoming school year, please review all pages carefully.

Student Drop-off/Pick-up
- Parent drop off and pick up will take place on Butler Drive by the flagpole. This is also the pick up and drop off location during the school day and for after school activities. The cafeteria entrance off of Wolf Road is for School Buses only.
- Once they are dropped off, students should walk up the sidewalk to the cafeteria entrance by the bus drop off.
- All buses will drop off by Wolf Road and students will enter the cafeteria.
- Students being dropped off after 7:30 will need to press the door buzzer in the foyer of the main entrance and office staff will allow the student in. Students getting picked up during the school day will need a prior request made by their parents. Students will then be released when the parent/guardian arrives.

Meet the New HMS Staff
Ashley Novotny
My name is Ashley Novotny and this year I will be teaching Business and AVID for the first time at the middle school level. Prior to joining Horning, I was a Business Teacher at Mukwonago High School for 5 years and am extremely excited to start my journey teaching middle school!
I graduated from UW-Whitewater with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration majoring in Finance back in 2016 and then decided to complete my Master's in Business Education to teach the content I love. When you can't find me in my classroom, you can find me playing cards with my husband, watching reality TV, traveling, and hosting Packer parties with family and friends. I am a huge Wisconsin sports fan, so you bet I'm attending all the Packers, Brewers, Bucks, and Badgers games that I can!
I look forward to meeting all of the students, families, and staff at Horning Middle School!
Cortney Merten
My name is Cortney Merten. I am very excited to be joining Horning Middle School this school year! This will be my 13th year teaching. For the last 8 years I have been teaching 7th grade English and Social Studies with the West Allis West Milwaukee School District. I have a strong project based learning background and like to create projects that let me students explore their own unique passions. I could not see myself teaching anything other than middle school. I love their creativity and enthusiasm. I received my degree from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy cooking, traveling, reading, and the outdoors. I spend a lot of my time in the summer hiking, kayaking, camping, rock climbing, and biking. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I am eager to get to know more about the Horning learning community and can’t wait for the upcoming school year!
Alex Reyes
Blair Kennedy
My name is Blair Kennedy and I will be the school psychologist here at Horning Middle School. This will be my second year working in the School District of Waukesha (previously at Whittier Elementary School), but my first year working in a middle school. In addition to working at Horning, I will also be at Hadfield Elementary School. I’m very excited and optimistic about this opportunity!
I attended UW-Madison for my undergrad and UW-Milwaukee for my masters and specialist degree in school psychology.
I was born and raised here in Wisconsin and currently reside in Milwaukee. I love to live an active lifestyle and have recently ran in the Milwaukee and Chicago marathons. I’m looking forward to this upcoming school year and meeting all of you!
Christiana Jung
My name is Christiana Jung. I am so excited to be joining HMS as a special education teacher! This will be my second year as a special education teacher but my fourth year as a teacher. My time in the classroom was spent in Milwaukee as a 3rd-grade teacher and an 8th-grade special education teacher. I also was a special education aide at Horning, so I am thrilled to be back!
I graduated in May with a master's degree in special education and will complete a second master's degree in teaching and leadership this spring. When I am not at school, I love spending time with my one-year-old daughter (Francesca), my husband (Joe), and my dog (Kylo)! We enjoy hiking, playing tennis, frisbee golf, and swimming. I also really enjoy sewing, aerial yoga, and gardening.
I am excited to be a part of Horning Middle School and cannot wait to meet you all!
