Guadalupe Gazette

We hope that the start of the year has gotten off well for you and your families. We are so excited to have new and returning families. This is our Guadalupe Gazette newsletter. Newsletters will be sent out once a month and will contain important updates and information from both the school site and our district office. Please be looking for these newsletters during the first week of each month.

Each year we welcome new staff members to our Guadalupe community. We have added a number of new faces. Please join me in welcoming the following folks.

Mrs. Borgia is our new front office Administrative Assistant.

Mrs. Bost is a new Kindergarten teacher

Ms. Ostiller is a new 2/3 class teacher

Mrs. Sturm is our new Instructional Support Teacher on Special Assignment

Mrs. Kippes is one of our new Speech teachers

Mrs. Lee is our new school psychologist

Coach Kim is our new Recess 101 coach

Ms. Rommer is our new Starting Arts music teacher.

This Friday, Sept 1st, is a Staff Development Day. There will be no school.

The follow Monday, Sept 4th, is Labor Day and schools will also be closed. We will see students back on Tuesday, Sept 5th.

Last Monday we were lucky enough to experience an amazing Solar Eclipse here at school. This was such a fantastic opportunity for our students and was a nice schoolwide activity for all of us to kickof the school year. Many thanks go out to our District Office for their planning and preparation. A commitment was made early on to purchase solar glasses for every student. Our teachers did a great job discussing what an eclipse is and how to safely view it. When the time came, students were so excited. I heard students say, "This is so cool!" One 2nd grader said, "This is the best day of my life!" What a great way to kick off the school year!

We are still in need of anyone who may be interested in helping out at lunch time supervising students. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in working from 11:50-12:50 each day, we are in great need of some help. The pay is $16/hr.

Thank to all of you who have made a commitment to be here early and safely navigate your vehicles in and around our school campus. The safety of our students and families is paramount and we all need to take this seriously. Please read over these expectations and join us in a committment to keeping everyone safe.

1. PLEASE PARK LEGALLY You may park in Visitor spaces if they are available or along the streets. Please do not block neighbors driveways. There is no parking along Vera Cruz between 1-4 PM everyday. This area is designated as the Pick Up line.
2. GO SLOW: Please go slow on the streets and in the parking lot. This will allow you time to stop safely and look out for people.
3. CROSS IN CROSSWALKS: Please take the extra time to go to the crosswalk and cross safely. Running across the street is very dangerous.
4. LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER: Both drivers and pedestrians need to be actively paying attention so as to avoid any type of accident. Cell phones can be a big distraction for both drivers and pedestrians. Let's keep them in our pockets around school.
5. KEEP WITH THE FLOW: Our drop off and pick up loop starts on Redmond and Monteverde. You cannot make a left turn from Vera Cruz into our parking lot during drop off and pick up. There is only one entrance and one exit. Please do not enter the exit for any reasons. Paying attention to all the signs around school will help keep things moving along.

Part of our school safety program is our Safety Patrol. 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to take on a leadership role by helping families cross safely at the entrance of our parking lot. We need parents and students to help volunteer once a week. Right now we only have the morning slots filled and are in desperate need helping fill the afternoon slots. If you can volunteer with your 4th or 5th grade student to help families cross from 2:40-2:55 one afternoon a week, our school community would be so grateful.

Safety Patrol students are invited to Safety Patrol lunches throughout the year, are recognized at the end of year recognition assembly, and also receive a generous gift. Please contact Mr. Izor at izorc@unionsd.org. if you can help keep our school community safe.

Are you interested in finding out more about the inner workings of our school and district? Would you be willing to come to four afternoon meetings this year to hear more about our school and provide feedback? School Site Council might be right up your alley.

School Site Council is a group of parents and staff members that meet four times a year to review our School Site Plan and Comprehensive Safety Plan. Members of the School Site Council are "in the know" about our schoolwide goals and how our funds are spent. In addition, information about the direction of our district is shared during these meetings. We are in need of a few folks who may be interested in participating on School Site Council. If you would like to be considered for School Site Council please email Mr. Izor your name and contact information at izorc@unionsd.org.

Picture Day is scheduled for September 15th. Ordering can be placed online through mylifetouch.com or in envelopes that will be sent home. Our school Picture ID is BY417238Q0. Flyers will be going home with information on how to order pictures.

The Classroom Giving drive is underway. You received information about the Classroom Giving Drive last week at Back to School Night and in your Friday folder. Information was shared about all of the fantastic ways your donations go to support the classroom. Money donated pays for field trips, presentations, enrichment materials, and so much more.

Each grade level determined what they would need per family to cover these costs and are asking for donations. All funds donated during the Classroom Giving Drive go right back into the classroom. We want all of our students to have these enriching experiences so please donate if you can.
