The Starburst
September 9, 2023
A Message from Principal Gallegos
Greetings, Barrows Families!
I feel like a broken record (my apologies to those who didn't grow up with the frustration of listening to one). But as I have written before, this is another LONG Starburst with LOTS of important bacl to school information for our returning and brand new families. Please read through and follow the links that apply to you!
WE ARE READERS! My absolute favorite thing to do as a principal is to visit classrooms and see engaged students and enthusiastic teachers. With the immense heat this week, we tried hard to help kids feel cool while still learning. I was so excited to hear multiple teachers say to me when I entered their classrooms, with the fans running, lights dimmed, and every student reading a book, "Wow, these kids love to read!" I must attribute much of this to your homes that encourage and value reading. Thank you for your partnership with us! Please remember that the Reading Public LIbrary is air conditioned(!!)and filled with many different types of books for students to read--from picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, and magazines. If you don't have a student who loves reading, we are happy to work with them to find the right books!
EVERY FAMLY MUST update their students' portal information to ensure it is correct and current. This is what we use to contact you in case of a student illness or emergency. Please hit submit so that we know everything is current and up-to-date.(Directions Below).
We have had a lot of questions regarding the letter from Food Services regarding mySchoolBucks and Financial Assistance. I hope this clarifies any confusion:
Lunch at Barrows is still FREE for all students. However, we plan to offer snacks for purchase later this school year, and having a mySchoolBucks will allow students to have funds to do that. Middle and high schools allow students to purchase snacks and a second lunch.
I encourage any family that would typically apply for free & reduced lunch to still apply for financial support using this link. Submitting this confidential information allows me to ensure that other school events associated with a cost are not a burden for any family that cannot afford it or needs some support. We want all students to have the same opportunities as all students and never be hindered by financial challenges.
Please remember to call the front office if there is a change in your child's dismissal. Teachers do not always have the opportunity to check their email, and students sometimes forget to turn in a note.
Back to School Night (for adults only):
Grades K-2 5:30-6 pm
Principal's Welcome, PTO & SEPAC 6:00-6:15 pm
Grades 3-5 6:15-6:45 pm
This evening is an opportunity for parents & guardians to hear from your student's teacher about their teacher, the curriculum, and our expectations. The principal, PTO, and representatives from our SEPAC will welcome our families and speak about ways to become involved in our school community. We will also be holding our School Council election by ballot in the back of the cafeteria. Please see the secion regarding our School Council below.
Due to the weather, the Back to School Picnic is postponed to this Friday! I am looking forward to seeing everyone there!
Warmly,
Mrs. Gallegos

Important PTO Updates
The PTO packet was sent home this week with your children as well as emailed on Thursday. Please take a look and reach out with any questions. Completing the volunteer questionnaire and paying dues is the BEST way to help us out at the start of the school year.
We were disappointed to postpone the back to school picnic on Friday, but the field and playground were so wet after the storm we decided it was for the best. We are hoping to have it on Friday September 15th from 5-6:30pm if the weather cooperates.

Reading Public Schools is a METCO District
METCO unites suburban towns with Boston to engage in a reciprocal learning partnership in support of all students. Because of this, every child who attends school in Reading Public Schools is a METCO student and every parent or guardian who has a student in RPS is a part of the METCO community.
"Since its founding during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, the METCO program has enrolled tens of thousands of Boston students of color in predominately white school districts, creating the opportunity for those districts to experience the advantages of learning and working in a racially and ethnically diverse setting."
Welcome Ms. Brown, our new METCO Coordinator & School Adjustment Counselor
Hello families! My name is Shaquanda Brown (Ms. Brown), and I am excited to be here as part of the Barrows community this year as the METCO Coordinator/School Adjustment Counselor. I completed my Master of Social Work degree from Salem State University in the spring of 2023. I was born and raised in Roxbury and attended METCO in Marblehead, MA, from 1st to 12th grade. I have worked with young people aged 6-21 for over ten years in the nonprofit space. I found my passion in working with and advocating for children and young adults through that work. I spend my free time mentoring and coaching first-generation, low-income Harvard students about leadership and social justice. Outside of that, I enjoy traveling, exercising, reading, listening to podcasts, and watching documentaries. I look forward to being in touch with you over the school year!
SEPAC works for the understanding of, respect for, and support of, all children with special needs in the community (including ALL children on IEPs or 504 plans and children who may require specialized support).

Barrows Safety Reminders
Arrival
- Please drive slowly up Edgemont to keep everyone safe; remember, it is a ONE-WAY during the school day.
- Do not park in the indented section by the gym. This is the "kiss & go" area for a quick drop-off.
- Doors open at 8:15 and close at 8:25. Your child needs to be in their seat by 8:25 AM. If your child arrives to school after the doors have closed, they must come to the front door and be marked tardy.
- The Staff Parking Lot is for staff only and off limits to all pedestrians from arrival-dismissal for the safety of all. Please respect this important aspect of our campus.
Dismissal:
- At dismissal time, there is no live pick-up in the driveway except for students who take the bus. Kindergarteners exit the building at 2:40 PM. The rest of the students dismiss at 2:45 PM from the same doors they enter in the morning.
As a safety reminder, the staff parking lot is staff-only. We respectfully ask that caregivers park along the streets. With our students exiting from their external doors in the parking lot, having cars drive in and out is not safe. You need to walk around the school on the blacktop to the back. Thanks for helping us out.
Ready to Play the Best Way
Please do not have your children wear flip-flops. Sneakers are best, but flip-flops are dangerous when running at recess (and Crocs aren't great).
Dogs and Puppies on School Grounds
School Committee policy prohibits dogs on school grounds as much as we all love dogs and puppies and as much fun as it is walking them. If you'd like to walk your dog as part of your pick-up routine, the dog has to stay off school property. If you'd like your child to walk to you on the sidewalk or to the driveway entrances at dismissal so you can wait with your dog, please make that plan with them.
Parent PlusPortal Access
As a parent guardian of a child in the Reading Public Schools, you have access to the Parent PlusPortal. The Portal will be used throughout your child’s academic career as it is where you update your child’s emergency contact information, view report cards, and beyond elementary school, see your child’s grades in real time. It also acts as a communication portal between you and your child’s teacher where oftentimes, different academic links, notes, or activities are shared.
If you are a returning parent, your account is still active but you still need to update the forms at the start of each school year. If you are a new parent guardian and have not received access, please reach out to our school administrative secretary, Donna Walsh at donna.walsh@reading.k12.ma.us. At that point, you will receive a separate email with your PlusPortal login information. The subject line of the email is Important! Barrows School PlusPortals login. This is a confidential portal that is linked to your email account. You have 48 hours to activate your Portal account using the temporary password supplied through the email. Once you login, you can update the password and personal information.
