Food For Thought... S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G Everyone!
Let's remember to spend some small group time each week with our highest level learners in ELA and in Math.
- Are we meeting their needs?
- What are they not as strong in and how can we shore that up?
- Where can they accelerate, where can they go deeper?
- No one likes to do more work, but perhaps making the work different can appeal to them
- We still need to model, they might just be able to pick it up faster, but to not model can increase anxiety.
- Sometimes our highest level learners need to learn to struggle, so building up challenges slowly will yield the best results.
Questioning strategies:
Ask them to clarify their thinking... and listen to their thought processes
"Why do you say that?"
"Can you explain further?"
Ask them to think of alternate viewpoints:
"How might someone else see this from a different perspective?"
"What might be the counter argument to that position?"
Question the Question:
"Why do you think I asked the class that question?"
"Which question do you think was most important for your learning?"
Also, look for think hard questions - in other words what is a really difficult or higher level question that you have seen on a test or applying this information on an assessment - use those for a high level student to think through and process while the others may be practicing a simpler level of question.

Safety
Shelter in Place - Most often used for Tornado
- You should get a Tapp App Alert for Shelter followed by an announcement to "Shelter for Tornado.. Move away from windows, drop cover and hold"
- Adults should always grab a current roll/red & green cards when leaving the classroom for an emergency or emergency drill. At reunification, you would be asked who you have and don't have from your current group.
- If the background is green on tap app, then you would be coaching students on being quiet, covering their head with their hands as this is a drill. Students do not use objects such as a text book to cover their heads.
- If the background is red on Tap App then we need you to get your students in place, coach on staying quiet to listen for adult directions, and then join your class in sheltering yourself. You may get further information from tap app on expected time/location of impact.

Great Things Happening at DCSS
We have Mary Branch (CRT) back from maternity leave and her baby slept for more than 11 hours one night last week!!
Mrs. Underwood was using higher order questions throughout her instruction that was viewed during a walkthrough
We made it two days without any arrival/dismissal complaints after a rough two weeks!
Ms. Webster is actively using the math/science connections material that was shown during the Imagine Math training.
Thankful for uplifting test results for Lisa Chesney
Mrs. Underwood was "caught" using PBIS positive verbal reminders of expectations for her entire route from class to resource. The class did amazing and was very responsive to the 100% positive approach.
Teachers have begun to check out SEL curriculum materials from Mr. Davis
- Mr. Swilling, Mr. Foxwell & Ms. Roberson have been implementing Nearpod to improve engagement in their intensive reading class!

Thank you for helping our students learn about our country's diverse heritage and diverse population!
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., September 26, 2019 – Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran applauded the State Board of Education for requiring accountability in the delivery of important required instruction including Holocaust education, African American history, Hispanic heritage, women’s history, civics and more outlined in Florida Statutes. This initiative builds on Governor Ron DeSantis’ Executive Order 19-32 to ensure Florida students receive the best education in the nation. This rule will go into effect October 2019.
“Florida must rediscover the value of civics education – our founding principles are what has enabled a nation conceived in liberty to thrive. How can we ensure that government of the people shall not perish, if we fail to provide all students with the foundational knowledge needed for properly discharging the duties of citizenship?” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I commend the State Board of Education for voting to ensure each and every student receives a high-quality civics education, and have no doubt this rule will prepare Florida students for success.”
“I applaud the State Board of Education for taking swift action and voting to ensure high-quality civics and history education in every Florida classroom,” said Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran. “The need for expanding and improving civic learning and democratic engagement is imperative – students who have a well-rounded education will be the next leaders of our nation. I thank Governor DeSantis for his commitment to ensuring Florida students are developed and engaged citizens that will work together towards a greater tomorrow. This new rule is just another step we are taking to ensure every student in Florida receives a world-class education.”
Highlights of Rule 6A-1.094124:
- By July 1 of each year, each school district must submit a report to the Commissioner of Education that describes how instruction was provided for topics in section 1003.42(2)(a)-(n) and (p)-(t), F.S., during the previous school year.
- This report shall contain:
- The specific courses in which instruction will be delivered for each grade level; and
- A description of the materials and resources utilized to deliver instruction.
- Failure to comply with the requirements of this rule may result in the imposition of sanctions described in section 1008.32, F.S.
