Wildcat Cub Edition - April

District Updates For December & January, 2024
New Semester, New Beginning
Friday marks the beginning of the second semester and the dash toward Spring Break. Every year I think the same thing: I can't believe the year is half over! It's true; it is! With spring around the corner, I start thinking about baseball.
I love baseball. I played it as a kid and in school. I love to watch it, especially live at the ballpark, like the Tigers. I remember when I was in little league - about the third or fourth grade - I was in a slump and just couldn't hit the ball. It got in my head. I doubted myself. It can become an unproductive cycle, can't it? After one unusually dreadful game where I beat my own personal best for strikeouts, my dad made a comment to me that stuck to this present day. He said, "Don't worry about what's done. Work on what's to come." After a bit of self-loathing, I dug in and practiced more, and more, determined to put bat to ball. About three games later, still with no hits, I was up to bat, full count, and swung at what I thought would be a strike. Surprisingly, I connected, and in the shock of the moment, just stood watching the ball sail over the third baseman's head, while my coach screamed at me to run. A stand-up triple. Now, I never was a 'great' player, but that day was a turning point for me. It also is a present-day reminder about focusing on the 'windshield view' more than the 'rearview.' We hopefully learn from the past but focus more on looking to the hope of the future, its opportunities, its promise.
New starts can be well-timed or out of left field. They can be welcomed or unwanted. Regardless, however, we look at them, whether they be the promise of the day found each dawn or the opportunity to grow found at the semester's start, I want to encourage you to spend a little more time looking out your windshield and not so much at the rearview. Who knows, maybe this is the day you hit that home run!
With gratitude, and,
my best to you and your family.
Finish strong,
Randy

May, 2024 School Bond on the Ballot - Zero Mill Increase Opportunity
In December, the Board of Education reviewed the final ballot language for the May proposal. This language was sent to the Michigan Department of Treasury for approval, a normal step in this process. The Department has approved the ballot language, and the Board of Education officially adopted this language at the February meeting, paving the way for the May Ballot! These are exciting times for MCS!
In the coming weeks, you will see much more information regarding the upcoming bond, its projects, and the opportunity for us to pave the road to the future, together!
ZERO-MILL INCREASE SCHOOL BOND in 2024
What does 'Zero Mill Increase' Bond Opportunity Mean?
May's School Bond is a zero-mill increase over the current tax rate opportunity for the residents who live within the Mattawan Consolidated School boundaries. Here is information on what 'zero-mill increase' means.
A "MILL" represents a small fraction of the value used for calculating property taxes. The tax-assessed value is roughly half (1/2) of the market value of a property. Each MILL is about 1/1000 or 0.1% of the tax-assessed value.
For instance, if a home has a market value of $100,000, its tax-assessed value would be approximately $50,000. Consequently, the homeowner would pay around $50 in taxes each year.
You calculate it like this: $100,000 (market value) x 1/2 = $50,000 (tax-assessed value) x 0.001 (1/1000 or .001) = $50 (annual tax).
To put it simply, for every $50,000 of tax-assessed home value, the homeowner pays approximately $50 in annual taxes. The Mattawan Consolidated District currently charges a property tax rate of 7 MILLS, and this rate won't go above 7 MILLS. This means that the property tax rate will not increase beyond its current level of 7 MILLS.

Celebrating Martin Luther King Day
January 15, 2024
On this Martin Luther King Day, let's honor the echoes of his dream, weaving threads of equality, justice, and love into the very fabric of our hearts and Mattawan Consolidated School Community.
Ms. King’s Third Grade Students Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday with Words of Wisdom
A Lesson of Hopes and Dreams
Ms. King’s 3rd grade students celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with focus on big words like “love”, "peace," and "hope." Students were learning about Dr. King’s work via books, conversation, and 3rd grade video lessons. Taking all they learned, they put pencils to paper, and created word bubbles full of wisdom. They were immersed in writing, sharing their own dreams for the world, and cutting out their creations to proudly display for all to see. In their own voices, each bubble echoed Dr. King’s message of love. Thank you Ms. King, for delivering instruction that helps Mattawan students understand how important Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was, and help them dream just as he did. Reading, writing, and opening minds is a winning combination for our 3rd graders to reach toward the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

Early Childhood Education Winter Recess Adventures
The Hidden Benefits of Winter Recess for Wildcat Development
Bundled like miniature explorers, our youngest Wildcats at Mattawan Early Childhood Education Center conquer snowdrifts and sculpt snow-castles. It’s been real cold, but a winter day like today gives cooped up kids an excellent opportunity to get fresh air, exercise, and socialize. It also gives them a chance to explore their imagination in a different environment, perhaps being inspired to build an igloo. Did you know Kids and grown-ups need vitamin D from the sun all year long? Our winter outdoor play helps give kids their daily dose to support health and their immune system. Winter outdoor play stimulates the imagination in ways indoor play can’t. These little Wildcats were happy, having fun, and glad to be back in a winter wonderland of friends. GO WILDCATS!
Fourth Grade Science, Where Learning Gets Messy
A Lesson Designed to Inspire the Next Generation of Innovators
Mattawan Later Elementary students are an inspiration to us all. They are showing us that the future of the planet is in good hands! The 4th grade teaching family conducted an oil spill simulation at Mattawan Later Elementary and explored environmental impacts of oil spills in their earth science lesson. They learned about the different types of spills, the causes, the consequences, and ways to clean up via response systems. In a learn-by-doing hands-on experiment, Wildcat scientists conducted their own investigations using a pie tin, oil, water, pipe cleaners, sponges, coffee filters and more. The goal was to find out which materials did the best job in cleaning up oil spills. Materials they used as tools worked in similar ways to the mechanical industrial spill equipment like oil skimmers that they read about in their lesson. Testing a clean-up with each tool, they drew comparisons, discussed how each one worked differently, which was the most effective, and why or why not each method worked. The sound of understanding in a the 4th grade wing was a symphony of "A-has," "I have an idea!!," and "We’re saving the wildlife!" Those first-hand findings provided valuable insights into the behavior of oil, water, and problem-solving. Mr. Karsten explained that in a major oil spill, typically 40% is extracted, and got students thinking about where the remaining 60% of oil spills go. That question led students to consider wildlife, how oil is passed through the food chain, how currents carry oil far beyond the point of the spill, and better options for cleaning up major catastrophes. This instruction powerfully got kids thinking about the importance of protecting the environment and brainstorming ways to save it. Meaningful learning is essential to growing curiosity and passion for science in Mattawan students. Mr. Karsten's impactful instruction will make students well-suited to tackle the challenges of the future and develop new technologies and solutions to the environmental problems we face. We are also growing mindful stewards of the planet. We are proud of our educators who are focused on memorable teaching and learning that unlocks potential in Mattawan kids.
Celebrate the Season with Mattawan Middle School's Harmony-Filled Halls!
Step into the vibrant world of Mattawan Middle School, where the air is alive with the joyous melodies of the season. The dedicated band students are weaving musical magic as they rehearse Three Themes from the Nutcracker, turning the hallways into a festive symphony of clarinets, saxophones, and cymbals.
In the heart of the classroom, the students are not just playing instruments; they are crafting art with each note. The room resonates with classic melodies, showcasing the students' focus, dedication, and the meticulous development of their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The growing confidence of these young musicians is palpable, creating an atmosphere of pride and achievement.
Learning to play an instrument is more than just a skill; it's a deeply rewarding journey for these aspiring musicians. The Mattawan band and choir programs serve as gateways to a new world of musical and creative expression for our Wildcats. Beyond the technical aspects, these programs nurture a sense of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance that will undoubtedly serve these students well in all aspects of their lives.
So, join us in applauding the harmonious spirit of Mattawan Middle School, where the magic of music enriches the lives of our talented Wildcats, filling the season with the true joy of the holidays.
Mattawan Students Make a Difference in Their Community with Food Drive
LEO Club Drives Out Hunger
The Mattawan High School LEO Club held their annual food drive at Wagoner’s on Saturday, November 4th to help those in need in their community. Due to the generosity of the Mattawan Community, they were able to raise a total of $2,400 in cash and items for the Mattawan Area Pantry. The LEO Club food drive is a great example of how Mattawan students are coming together and understanding the importance of giving back. We are Mattawan proud of the difference they are making in the lives of others. When students give back to the community, they show others the importance of compassion, empathy, and social responsibility. Special thanks to Ms. Garman for her leadership, Wagoners Hometown Food Store, and our generous donors. Go Wildcats!

From Snow Drifts to School Smiles
Thanks to Mattawan Support Staff for Snow-Slaying Skills
When the first snowflakes blanket the ground or icy sheets glaze the sidewalks, a silent army begins its work. Under the dim Mattawan morning light, school support staff emerge, armed not with textbooks and lesson plans, but with shovels, snow blowers, and a fierce dedication to ensuring the school bell rings. Mattawan’s maintenance crews turn slippery sidewalks into safe paths. Our school bus drivers navigate roads with skill, safely delivering students to their destination. Countless unseen heroes work their magic; they are the unsung heroes of inclement weather and the threads that hold the schools together when Michigan winter throws a punch. Featured today is Tim Coles, using some snow-slaying skills to clear the way, and Kim Kondor, a snowy roads and steady wheels’ school bus driver. We know that our parents are grateful when students can safely return to school after a few snow days at home. We are just as grateful to our entire support staff team for their dedication that keeps the wheels of education turning! You make Mattawan happen!

Antwerp Township Senior Center Provides Students with Opportunity to Pay Tribute to Local Veterans
The atmosphere at the Antwerp Township Senior Center was filled with gratitude and a strong sense of community as Mattawan students gathered to honor local veterans for Veterans Day. Students were thrilled to be guests at a luncheon hosted by Antwerp Township. Boyscout Troup 161 took the first steps to post the colors at the Veterans celebration. A beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, sung by the Mattawan’s Muse Choir, filled the room with pride and patriotism, setting the tone for the rest of the luncheon. Superintendent Randy Fleenor then offered remarks about veterans, past and present, and spoke of courage, sacrifice, and the importance of freedom. His words echoed deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. His words of appreciation were met with warm smiles and nods from the veterans. The trumpeter from Boyscout Troup 161 sounded Taps as a moment of remembrance. Our students were honored to be guests at Antwerp Towsnip and valued the opportunity to be in the presence of our local hero’s.
Local Veterans Receive a Hero's Welcome
Mattawan Middle School Veterans Day Honors
On a crisp autumn day, students at Mattawan Middle School gathered to host a Veterans Day celebration. The morning began with a talented student whose rendition of the national anthem was a moving tribute to our country. A procession of veterans marched through the school halls, with footsteps of pride and honor. Students lined the corridors, holding signs and cheering as the local heroes marched by. The veteran’s day brunch was the perfect for fellowship and time together. A student-designed video was presented, featuring students and staff who spoke of their own family’s veterans. Student speakers shared remarks about the noble calling that requires sacrifice, dedication, and courage. Our veterans were asked to stand so that their child, grandchild, great-grandchild, or the student who invited them could give them a Mattawan medal to commemorate their valiant service. This experience made way for memorable learning for Mattawan Middle School kids. Meeting a veteran can be a humbling and inspiring experience, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. Planning and preparing the middle school celebration of veterans provided a greater understanding about the cost of freedom and importance of honoring those who have served. The warm smiles and nods from our local heroes was of great reward. The guests of honor were visibly touched by the students' appreciation, the handshakes, joyful tears, and hugs. The Mattawan Middle School Veterans Day Celebration is a reminder of the importance of bridging the generation gap and connecting with our veterans. It was also a reminder that even the smallest act of gratitude can make a big difference in someone's life. GO WILDCATS.
