Hello Kiker Comets!

This past month we had guidance lessons on the importance of kindness, mindfulness, and self-awareness. We discussed ways to practice mindfulness to ensure success in and out of the classroom.

During our kindness lesson we had students write/draw an act of kindness on a slip of paper. Each grade level was represented by a different color. We now have created a rainbow of kindness representing all our students' great ideas for ways to show kindness!

Unity Day is coming up on October 19th.

• Local okra sampling. Sampling days will vary by campus.

• Wednesday, Oct. 12 - New menu item: Organic, Grass-Fed Hamburger sourced locally from Beetnik Foods in Austin.

• Thursday, Oct. 13 - Chocolate milk day, all levels K-12.

• Menus will feature Farm to School, Texas-grown red apples throughout the week.

A group of parents, caregivers, and staff are in the process of forming a Diversity and Inclusion Committee at Kiker. All are welcome to join! The first meeting will be held on Oct. 24 at 6 pm in the Kiker library. If you'd like more information or want to be involved, please email Kristin Finan at kristinfinan@yahoo.com.

Kiker's Fall Book Fair Spooktacular is coming soon! Coloring Sheets are going home this week with instructions. Please have your student return to the library by Tuesday, 10/25 in order for us to showcase them throughout the book fair.

We're sure your students are coming home today discussing today's amazing APEX Pep Rally and Fundraiser! This is Kiker PTA's biggest fundraiser of the year and we're looking forward to putting the "fun" in fundraising. Leadership lessons in class begin tomorrow, and pledges will be accepted between now and next weekend. We will wrap everything up with an energetic Fun Run on Friday, October 21 during your students designated PE time. We'll see you there to celebrate!

Please join us for the Austin ISD Showcase scheduled for Saturday, October, 22, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Palmer Events Center (900 Barton Springs Rd.)

The Austin ISD Showcase will replace the high school and middle school fairs. All schools, including elementary schools, will have the opportunity to showcase their campus to our students and families.

About the Hunter 5K

Join us on October 29, 2022 for the fourth annual Hunter 5K Halloween Fun Run!

The Hunter 5K was created to honor and celebrate the fast and free spirit of four-year-old Hunter Henderson, who tragically passed away in December of 2018. Hunter loved Halloween and dressed up in costume throughout the year. Held on Halloween weekend, race participants are strongly encouraged to dress in their most creative Halloween costumes in his memory. The Hunter 5K is the inspiration of Chance Henderson, Hunter’s father. An avid runner, he was moved to create a fun and inclusive event that Hunter would be proud of.

Funds raised from the event benefit the Dell Children’s Medical Center who helped the Henderson family immensely during Hunter’s stay.

This year we are encouraging 4th and 5th grade students to sign up for safety patrol for a two week block of time during the school year. Thank you for being a campus leader!

Students will drop backpack off in the front foyer/vestibule, sign in, grab a vest, and head out front. We need help waving cars to the front of the line, opening doors, and welcoming each child with a warm greeting or sending students off at the end of the day.
