Principal's Pen
It is hard to believe we are half way through February already! A challenge we are facing here at HDES is the parking situation at dismissal. The snow banks and limited parking spaces make things difficult. As a result, the buses are not able to safely maneuver in the parking lot.
HDES staff members have been brainstorming solutions to this problem and we are working on a plan for a staggered dismissal period. That could mean that everyday pick up students and other pick ups aren't dismissed until a later time, such as 3:10-3:15. This would allow the buses to enter and leave by 3:10, parents would then have plenty of space to park and enter the building to pick up their children.
Be on the look out for more information at the end of this week, as we are working to implement this change the week AFTER February vacation.
Please feel free to call or email me with any thoughts or suggestions regarding this issue.
Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Girls on the Run
Hello All! We are having a record number of students wanting to participate in Girls on the Run this spring. If there are two people able to coach after school until 5pm on two non consecutive weekdays than HDES could have two teams. Two teams means more students get the opportunity to participate!! Please email me if you would like more information on coaching.

Health Reminder
With the flu season upon us, this is just a quick reminder to keep your child home
when he/she is sick. Your child may return to school when he/she is free from
vomiting, diarrhea, or fever for 24 hours. He/she must be fever free for 24 hours
without the aid of medicine before they can return to school. If you have any
questions feel free to contact the school nurse.
Thank you.

Mix It Up at Lunch Day
To help celebrate Math-A-Thon on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 we will be participating in a numbers themed Mix It Up at Lunch Day!
What is Mix It Up at Lunch Day?
From tolerance.org: A national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance over a decade ago, Mix It Up at Lunch Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. In our surveys, students have identified the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. So on Mix It Up at Lunch Day we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misperceptions can fall away.
On Wednesday, February 13, 2019 the cafeteria tables will each be decorated with a different number. As students enter the cafeteria they will be given a small piece of paper with a number on it that shows them which table to sit at for lunch. Students will be encouraged to talk with the students at their table, and find similarities with the possibility of making a new friend. We are hoping Mix It Up at Lunch Day will be a lot of fun and have a positive impact on our school!
