November 2023
Greendale Elementary Names Teacher of the Year
Lisa Fugate has been selected as the Greendale Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2023-24. She started her career over 35 years ago as a tutor in Lee County. The following year she moved into the role of school counselor which is a role she has held ever since. Lisa has worked at both the high school and elementary level and has served in three counties; Lee County, Wise County, and Washington County. Here in Washington County, she has worked at Meadowview Elementary, Patrick Henry High School, and Greendale Elementary.
Lisa is most thankful and proud of her family and her children. She has always had a love of working with children and considers herself blessed for the opportunity to do so. Two programs that she sponsors that are dear to her heart are Breakfast/Lunch groups and the Friendly Helper program. She finds that meeting with students in small groups allows her to build relationships with the children, which is very important to her. Lisa feels, "These kids are special." In addition to the children, Lisa also feels very blessed to work with so many exceptional colleagues. She values the contributions of everyone and truly believes that "It takes a village."
Canned Food Drive Provides for Greendale Families
During the month of November, Greendale held a canned food drive. With the food collected and additional contributions from Kelly's Closet, we were able to provide Thanksgiving meals to twelve families. Kelly's Closet provided turkeys, stuffing, pies, and gravy. Canned food that was not used for the Thanksgiving meals was provided to Faith in Action for distribution in the community.
During the month of December, we will be collecting donations to provide for Gingerbread Kids. If you are interested in sponsoring a child or helping to provide additional resources, please contact Mrs. Lisa Fugate.
In addition, we will be collecting small items to assemble gift bags for the residents of Greendale Home across the street from the school. Please send in items the week of December 4-8. Items to be collected include: puzzle books; socks; toothbrushes and toothpaste; peppermints or butterscotch discs; and body wash, shampoo, or deodorant.
STEM Night
Robotics
Greendale Elementary had a successful Robotics season . They won the Innovation Project Award. They created “How to LEGO Kits” for the primary hallway to use when building with LEGOs in the library. The kits have a picture book and a QR code to allow students to have both audio and visual aides when building .
Kindergarten Thanksgiving
Kindergarten learned about the events of the first Thanksgiving and to compare the present and past through a series of events. They participated in activities Pilgrim children may have done such as churning butter, making cornbread, writing on slates with horn books, sewing, building log cabins, and playing colonial games. They also had a dress up Thanksgiving feast with their families.
Bus Driver Mr. Franks Shares His Art With Students
On Monday, November 20, Greendale Elementary bus driver and local artist Mr. Milas Franks spoke to fourth graders about his most recent painting "Franks Farm". Students learned about his painting techniques and also about the theme of the painting, molasses making! After the discussion, students were able to sample some locally made molasses. The students love to hear Mr. Franks talk about his paintings and his childhood! And a few of them even loved the molasses!

Please allow children to wear festive holiday attire (red, green, sparkles, etc.). We do request that they DO NOT wear anything on their heads as we will be providing head attire based on their role in the program.
