In this season of gratitude, it is important to take a moment and reflect on all we have to be thankful for at our school. Although it has been a very challenging year, your support continues to make A.W. Becker a successful learning community and caring environment. From our school to your home, we want to thank you for our valuable home-school partnership and all that you do.

We have two upcoming early dismissal days for parent conferences (11/30 and 12/1).

Dismissal is at 12:30 PM on both of these dates. Please note the following for these days:

• PM Pre-K students will not be coming to school on these days and AM Pre-K students will be dismissed with the rest of the grades at 12:30 PM.
• Parent pick up will begin at 12:05 PM using the same process on the side of the building.
• Students who take the bus will be dismissed starting at 12:15 PM.
• ASAP will be held.
• Students will eat lunch prior to dismissal.

Tuesday, November 30th and Wednesday, December 1st will be a half-day for students so that families can participate in parent conferences, in addition to a full day on Tuesday, December 7th. The conferences this year will be held virtually and in-person, at the discretion of the family. If families choose to attend in person, they will be required to wear masks and stay 6 feet away from staff. We are also requesting that only those necessary for the meeting attend.

Report cards will be distributed in person if you are attending the conference and sent home via backpack mail the evening prior if you are attending virtually. Please contact your child's teacher to set up a conference. Thank you.

Every fall, families receive a score report with their child's NYS Assessment results from the spring testing. The reports from the 2021 assessments for students in grades 4 and 5 (last year's grade 3 and 4 assessment) will be enclosed in your child's report card.

You are no longer required to bring food into the main office 3 days in advance. We still recommend store bought or individually wrapped, although it is not required. As always, please be sure to sign any food brought into the building into our food log in our vestibule area and notify your child's classroom teacher in advance.

Our students will soon be able to check out library books again! In the next couple of weeks, our students and staff will be taught how to digitally borrow a book. The books will then be delivered to classrooms.

In addition, there will be available blocks of school wide book exchange time where teachers can send 1-2 students at a time for book perusal and return. Students in primary grades will also have dedicated library exchange time.

More information will be forthcoming from classroom teachers.

It is certainly getting colder outside! Please note that we go outside daily for recess and mask breaks unless it is raining or the wind chill temperature drops below 20 degrees.

Please send your child with appropriate dress for outdoor activities. Once we have snow on the ground, students will be allowed to play in the snow at recess if they have snow pants and boots. Those students without snow gear will have outdoor activities on the blacktop.

Thank you for your assistance to ensure our students have appropriate clothing for the weather during school hours.

As always, if there is a financial need and you are unable to provide items for your child, please contact our school counselor (Tom Trainor) or social worker (Michelle Brusic) for confidential assistance.

As the holidays approach, we want to make you aware of opportunities for you to assist others during this season of giving. The “Kids Giving to Kids” program helps to provide holiday assistance for Becker students and their younger siblings.

Donations of gift cards towards this program can honor teachers and staff members in lieu of holiday gifts, or you may send in a gift card to honor a loved one.

Gift cards may be sent to the office in a sealed envelope addressed to Mrs. Stott along with the cut and decorated mitten (sent home in flyer). The mittens we receive with the donations will decorate the A.W. Becker lobby.

Donations will be accepted until December 8th. Thank you so much for your support!
