Canby High School Family Newsletter
For the Week of November 4th to November 10th, 2021
Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
There’s less than three weeks to go before final exams are here. Students should be working hard to complete final assignments and make up for any missing work. Check StudentVUE/ParentVUE frequently and connect with teachers if there are any questions. It’s best to go into the final weeks of the term prepared!
Last week, our FFA chapter travelled to the national conference and performed well. Jillian Schaffner, Keegan Welander, Kate Williams and Jessie Samarin received a bronze award in vet science. Brooke Jonas received 10th place in the nation for her agriscience project. Jacob Palacios was one of 53 FFA members chosen to play in the National FFA Band this year. Our chapter was recognized for their exceptional work with the Canby Center and received a Gold Chapter award. Congratulations FFA, and thank you for representing us so well!
In sports, congratulations to our soccer player David Villegas for being named the Three Rivers League Goalkeeper of the Year. Thank you David for your leadership and effort!
Our cross country boys team had a great performance last week in the Three Rivers League District Meet. They came in 3rd and qualified for state for the first time in 15 years! They compete this Saturday at Lane Community College. Good luck boys!
The CHS Trap Team is doing very well this Fall season, with members winning numerous competitions. Check out the standings here.
Finally, despite our tough loss against Wilsonville HS last week, our football team will get back to our winning ways this Friday with our first playoff game, against Lebanon HS. Kick off is 7:00pm at CHS. Because this is an OSAA playoff, admission will be charged to all who attend.
Stay healthy and strong, Canby! Go Cougars!

Athletics
This week, fall sports enter the OSAA playoffs. As we are hosting on behalf of the OSAA, both parents and students are charged entry. Parents pay $8 for the first two rounds and students are $5 for all rounds. Also, in accordance with the broadcasting rights for the OSAA, the NFHS Network will not be free of charge and require a monthly subscription in order to watch the playoffs. Please plan accordingly to cheer on your Cougars!
In addition to the Oliver Insurance Athlete of the Week, Canby athletics is excited to offer a new athlete of the week sponsored by Odd Moe’s. This award will go to the Unsung Hero of our athletic teams. This is the athlete that often doesn’t appear in the record books, but the team would not be successful without them. Other Information
Join Us-Employment in Canby Schools
While parent volunteering continues to be on hold until further notice, we do have employment opportunities in our schools for part-time positions like instructional assistants, nutrition services, custodians and more. We are also seeking on-call substitutes for those positions, which would provide even greater flexibility. Visit our employment website to view all current opportunities.
Upcoming Parent Input Opportunities
We are still collecting names of interested parents who want to serve on committees that provide planning input for the future CHS bond construction projects. Our partners in this process, Mahlum Architects, will soon be looking for more community input through focus groups. If you are interested, please respond by completing this form.
CHS Video Broadcast Recruitment
Parents and students, do you have an interest in live streaming and announcing events? Would you like to help CHS and the community? Do you want to be a part of our Cougar team?
We are hoping to create a live stream broadcast network of volunteers to cover CHS sports and activities in a professional manner in keeping with the hard work that our students and athletes put in. Our vision is to develop a dynamic partnership with CTV-5 to support these broadcasts with interested students and adults providing the camera work, production, and commentary. If you have an interest in participating with this after school club, please contact Tyler Francke with The Canby Current and Now Hear This Studios at francke@canbyfirst.com. Please include your contact information and any prior media experience.
Attendance and Sick Students
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
To report an absence, call our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Please report an absence as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after the absence.
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment, inform the attendance office as soon as possible. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience. Please partner with us to ensure great attendance and to remove any attendance barriers.
Bus Transportation
If you have any questions or problems with school bus transportation, please email Student Transport of America (STA) at canbyschoolbus@ridesta.com.
