This Week in Art

by Erin, grade 7 - On Monday, we learned about Michelangelo. Michelangelo was a famous architect, painter, and sculptor. One important sculpture Michelangelo sculpted was the Pietà. He was 24 when he sculpted it and it was Mary and Jesus from the Bible.

On Tuesday, we read a magazine about Anish Kapoor. Anish Kapoor makes very, very big sculptures. He sculpted "the Bean" that was installed in Chicago in 2004. He also sculpted Dismemberment, Site 1 in a grassy hillside in New Zealand. This sculpture is nearly as long as a football field.

On Wednesday, we watched a video of an artist sculpting a frog on a lightbulb out of stone. We started planning what we wanted to carve a soap bar into.

On Thursday and Friday, we started carving a bar soap into whatever item we wanted to.

by Darshan, grade 7 - This week in Art, we watched a video about Michelangelo and how he loved to sculpt, but not really paint, but painted anyway for the popes. We also watched a time lapse of how a sculpture got carved. We also started to make a soap carving or we started to carve into soap like a sculpture.

by Meah, grade 6 - This week in Ms. Bloodworth's 5th period art class, we drew a portrait of someone who has inspired us for the Black History Month art show. I drew Serena Williams. We also, in the background, drew an elaborate pattern which is a very detailed pattern. We learned about how to draw a face of a person. You will need to line up your neck with your eyes so your head is not being held up by a twig. But the most important part of drawing is to do your best and have fun.

Due Thursday 2/8: Design a valentine or an anti-valentine. Art II sketchbook assignments should look like finished works of art, like they took about an hour to complete. They are due every Thursday.

National Junior Art Honor Society (NJAHS) is collecting art supplies for a school art program that was affected by Hurricane Harvey. Please send art supplies to the art room.

Calling all dancers! If you are interested in trying out for the HTMS Dance Team, there will be a mandatory parent information meeting on Tuesday, January 30th at 6 pm in the auditorium. An optional pre-clinic will be held on Tuesday, February 13th from 3:00-5:00 pm. Mandatory clinic and tryouts will take place during the week of March 12-16. Attention all girls interested in trying out for HTMS Cheerleader: There will be a MANDATORY Parent Meeting on Thursday, February 15th at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium. All pertinent information regarding tryouts will be distributed at this meeting. HTMS Cheer Tryouts will be March 19th -23rd.
