Restorative Practices Video
A few weeks ago I asked Ms. Alex Layman and our behavior support team to create a brief video on restorative practices here at Mountain View so families could get a better understanding of what they are and also so you could incorporate some of the same practices in your homes. When my sons were younger, summer usually got pretty bumpy as they quickly got on each other’s nerves and they had to constantly resolve conflict in healthy and constructive ways. As a young parent, I felt like an exhausted referee constantly trying to properly dole consequences. After learning about an alternative way to deal with wrongdoing, I changed the way we dealt with conflict in our home and it has made a HUGE difference.
By focusing on how my sons were harming their relationships with one another (and with us) instead of how they had broken a rule, we helped teach empathy and develop self-actualization. Even as they got older, my sons would much rather lose screen time (yes… you read that correctly) or access to the car keys than have to own up to their wrongdoing and make things right with their brother (or with us). As adults, we’re the same aren’t we? We hate owning our mistakes and our wrongdoing (especially with our own children). The only thing worse is giving the person we wronged an opportunity to have a voice in how we harmed them and also a choice in how we can repair the harm and make things right. Check out this video for more information:
A Note (and request) from our PTO
Would you like to connect with other MVES families outside of school (playdates, summer birthdays, homework questions, assistance with rides)? If so, the MVES PTO invites you to be part of the MVES PTO Family Directory. Use this link to fill out only the contact information you would like to share with other families: https://forms.gle/QM3jjrJHj19U6QxK6. Multiple parents/caregivers may make their own individual entries for the same child/children. After submitting your contact information, you will automatically receive a link to an electronic spreadsheet of responses. This directory is created and maintained by the MVES PTO and is not affiliated with the school or division. Thank you!
¡Gracias!
