When going to the grocery store, we tend to get in a rut and buy the same things. Filling your cart with budget-friendly and healthy options is one way to get out of that rut. Use the tips below to find healthy ways to change things up down every aisle.

Read the Food Label
Reading the food label can help you decide if a food is a nutritious choice. Look for choices with a lower daily percentage of fat, sodium, and sugar while having higher percentages of vitamins and minerals. To learn more about comparing food labels take a look at this link:

Understanding the Price Tag
The price tag on the grocery shelf includes a lot of helpful information. Stores will display two prices for food being sold. Retail Price and Unit Price. Retail Price is the price that you pay for each item. Unit price will tell how much the item costs per pound, ounce, quart or other measured unit. These two sets of prices help in determining the best way to stretch your dollars.

Meet the Nutrition Facilitators
Mrs. Nye graduated from Saginaw Valley State University with a degree in elementary education. She lives in Freeland with her husband, two year old son Lucas, and black lab named Zoey. She is also expecting a baby girl coming in September! When not spending time with her family she loves to read, go for walks around her neighborhood, and cook.
Ms. Blumer has a professional background in elementary education. She lives with her husband in Bay City. They have nine children between the two of them and five grandchildren! Ms. Blumer has two cats named Baby and Mama and a bunch of chickens that live in the backyard! In her free time she enjoys working in the garden and cooking fun things in the kitchen. Ms. Blumer loves to go on long walks, sometimes even going as far as 8 or 9 miles! When the weather is nice and hot, she can be found at the beach splashing in the water.
Mrs. Hatfield has a professional background in fitness. She lives with her husband and two children, ages 12 and 16, in Hemlock. She also has a dog named Diesel and a cat named Sunny. Mrs. Hatfield enjoys being outdoors and running. She also enjoys watching her children play volleyball, basketball, hockey and run track. She is looking forward to the warm days ahead when she can spend more time outdoors with her family.
Mr. Miller lives in Saginaw and has an amazing wife and three children Joey (14), Maxwell (12) and Gabriella (9). When he's not coaching or driving his children to one of their many sporting activities, he enjoys playing golf, swimming and hanging out with his family. One of his favorite summer activities is cooking on the grill. He makes a mean lemon-peppered grilled chicken with grilled asparagus. He is looking forward to the warm summer days ahead!
