Newfane Elementary will have a full day of instruction on Tuesday, June 20, 2023; and a half day of instruction on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (11 AM dismissal), which will be our last student day. Also as a reminder, there will be no school for students on Monday, June 19th, 2023 in observance of the Juneteenth state holiday.

Mrs. Hawkins had some extra help this week with her Principal for a Day, Riley! Riley enjoyed helping with Panther Pride, assisting students in Tech. Lit., calling Twister moves in PE, and lending a hand in the main office. Thank you, Newfane PTSA for sponsoring Family Bingo Night, where Riley won this prize.

We were so excited to cheer on all of our 4th graders in the Spelling Bee! Everyone did a great job and we are so proud of them! Thank you to Newfane PTSA for sponsoring this event and congratulations to our five 4th graders who will move on to the Regional Spelling Bee at Lockport HS on May 13th: Mercy, Gordon, Isabella, and Dalila.

In science, Mrs. Brown’s students made ‘hats’ to protect themselves from the sun after being ‘deserted’ on an island. Check out their creations! Supplies were: a paper plate, a paper towel, foil, a paper bag, string, two binder clips, and tape.

Mrs. Ganshaw’s students recently welcomed a visitor from the ECC Dental Hygiene Program. They learned about the foods that keep their teeth and body healthy, proper brushing and flossing and even enjoyed a story read to them by the Tooth Fairy!

Mrs. Niver's 2nd grade class prepared to move West as part of their unit on Westward Expansion. They dressed up, packed their wagons, hitched up the team and headed out. They also enjoyed homemade butter and cornbread!

Mrs. Stickney, Mrs. Bower, Ms. Ganshaw, and Ms. Westphal helped their students become published authors. Check out the covers of their classroom books!

Congratulations to our April Panther Pride recipients!

Please ensure your child wears or brings sneakers every day to school. Especially with the weather improving, our students spend time outside regularly and sneakers are a must for safety. Crocs, dress shoes, and sandals can be very dangerous on our playgrounds and hiking trails.

Of course, we want all students in school every day. Unfortunately, sometimes that isn't always possible. If your child is feeling under the weather, please refer to the Sick Day Guidelines below and keep your child home if they exhibit any of the following symptoms.

If your child becomes ill and doesn’t feel well enough to take part in school, you should keep him/her home until the symptoms improve. This will help to prevent the spread of the illness to others at school as well as give them much needed rest to recover.

These are some of the examples of when your child should be kept home:

• Active vomiting (within the last 24 hours)
• Active diarrhea – three or more times in six hours
• The beginning of an airway infection (cold/cough/runny nose). This is especially important for those who are unable to manage their own body fluids.
• Extreme tiredness and/or lack of appetite
• Fever with headache, body aches, earache, sore throat
• Undiagnosed or unknown rash (a rash that has not been seen or treated by a health care provider)
• Any of the above symptoms with fever or chills
• Untreated skin conditions
• If antibiotic treatment is needed, your child should remain home for the first full 24 hours of medication (e.g., if your child has three doses per day ordered, then three doses must be given before the child returns to school)

Your child can return to school when he or she is well enough to take part in school and has had not has a fever for 24 hours without medication.
