Happy New Year
It's hard to believe that it's 2023! Everyone has been working hard on transitioning back into their classroom routines. The students have been excited to share their experiences with their families, holidays, travels, and other activities. It has been entertaining to hear about their lives and the favorite things they did over break. January is usually a time for reflection and goal setting. Talk with your children about any goals they have set for themselves, and ask if any of these have to do with their school work. Together we can make great things happen.
We wish you and your families the best in this new year.

School Safety Update
Just as we have fire drills and bus evacuation drills to ensure the safety of the staff and students in the event of emergency situations, we also ensure that the students are aware of all of our safety and emergency preparedness measures. Our teachers will be providing an overview of the ALICE response protocols in place at Rockport schools. ALICE is the acronym for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate. Next week, the teachers will use age appropriate materials within the classroom setting to provide a familiar and nurturing environment to discuss the information. We will not be holding a drill during this overview; you will be informed later in the school year when a formal ALICE drill will take place in our schools.

CURRICULUM UPDATES
Literacy:
Some staff at RES are currently taking part in a DESE grant opportunity. This is providing the support of Lead for Literacy (leadforliteracy.org) and DESE in order to create a detailed action plan that defines priorities and goals for literacy, including evidence based instruction and intervention, assessments, and professional learning. This plan should be completed by April of 2023.
Math:
Staff and students continue to use the iReady Classroom Mathematics program and resources in class to build a deeper understanding of mathematics through discussions around problem solving strategies. Students are about to complete their mid-year diagnostic which will provide us with progress towards student growth in order to adjust instructional strategies and interventions.
Science:
Our 2nd and 3rd grader teachers, and Mr. Whitley in 4th grade, just took part in full day in person training on our pilot of the Full Option Science System (FOSS) science program. Staff and students are enjoying the hands on discovery nature of FOSS.
