Just One Flake
Travis Jonker, our very own Librarian at Dorr Elementary, just released his third picture book on October 10th. Just One Flake is about a kid who is ridiculously determined to catch a snowflake on his tongue. This is the first of Mr. Jonker's books were he was both the author and the illustrator. Just One Flake has already gone out for a second print. Congratulations Mr. Jonker, Dorr Elementary is lucky to have you!
South West Vocal Music Festival
8 students participated in the South West Vocal Music Festival September 29, 2023 at Western Michigan University. Aiden Ketchapaw, Kayden Balch, Loreli Beckwith, Nick Ward, Nikollete Harrison, Tristell Pawloski, Thomas Parker and Tiannah Garcia spent the day learning the music that will be sung by other students from our school and from 13 other schools at the Festival in March. This festival will be held at the Miller Auditorium March 14, 2024. This has been noted as one of the Wayland Union High School Choir highlights of the year. Close to 600 students will be making musical magic come this spring. Stay tuned for more detailed information.
Making the Most of a Rainy Week
Rainy weather keeps middle school PE from going outdoors, but doesn't keep them from having fun working together! Team Building activities on the balcony with indoor soccer down on the courts.
Michigan Schools Vocal Music Association's Regional honors Choir Concert
On Saturday, October 14th, six Wayland Middle School choir students participated in the Michigan Schools Vocal Music Association’s Regional Honors Choir Concert. It took place at the Jenison Performing Arts Center and included students from area schools. Wayland students who sang in the choir are Sarah Harnish, Ariel White, Elaina Thomas, Audriana Marston, Kaylee Nylaan, and Isabella DeLaney.
Michigan Youth in Government
Earlier this week, high school students in Michigan Youth in Government had the opportunity to attend the Youth in Government Conference at Calvin College. Students had a chance to participate in mini breakout sessions and heard student election candidates debate for their spot as nominated candidates for this year’s spring conference.
Principal for the Day
2nd Grader Peyton Murphy won the honor of being principal for a day. This honor was a prize that students could win at the Dorr Elementary School Carnival. She did a great job!
Coding in MS
Students in Mr. Brown's class are beginning to work on coding. Today, October 20th, students had the opportunity to work through the program with partners to figure out how to create code that allowed their character to collect gems and open gates. Eventually, students will be working on coding a Sphero to travel through a maze!
