We have ramped up our Kulshan Gear swag! We now sell KMS beanies ($15), cinch sacks ($10), and blankets ($20). All items are in stock - ask for Lisa Scott in the main office. We are still selling our traditional gear as well: KMS sweatshirts ($25) and t-shirts ($15). All of these items make great birthday presents and holiday gifts. Here is our flyer with all of the details. Yay!

Mood Meter for Parents

As you might know, we use a social emotional curriculum called RULER, from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The Mood Meter is an important part of the RULER curriculum. Our students know the Mood Meter well and they can explain how to use it. Families can use the Mood Meter at home. You could even try modeling this with your kids this weekend: Tell your child how you are feeling and then you and your student can identify the "mood" on the Mood Meter. If you have time, you can explain why you are in that "mood" and where you want to go next. There is also a really helpful Mood Meter app you can download for free.

Meta Moment

Another useful part of our RULER curriculum is the Meta Moment. Adults and students use the Meta Moment to help direct their emotions in a useful way.

  1. Sense: Notice a change in your body or mind.
  2. Pause: Wait to respond. Breathe to think more clearly.
  3. See your best self: Imagine your best self in a situation.
  4. Strategize and Act: Think of a strategy, and try it out.

Fall Sports Photo Orders (Extended)

Did your child participate in a Fall Sport? Girls Soccer? Boys Soccer? Track? We have extended our Fall Sports Photo Order deadline to Friday, December 13. We have two sizes: 5x7 ($5.00) or 8x10 ($10.00). Please make check payable to KMS. Photos will be ready for you before we head into Winter Break. This is your last chance to order a Fall Sports photo! Order forms are available in our main office or online here.

Free Sweaters & Sweatshirts

We have a large collection of gently used (and washed) free sweaters in the office at Kulshan. With cold weather arriving, feel free to send your child to the office for a free sweatshirt. They are for anyone who might need an extra sweatshirt or might have forgotten theirs. Also, if you know that your child needs a sweatshirt, but they might be afraid to ask, we can have them come into the office to meet with a counselor in a discrete way. All you have to do is email a counselor and if you could include your child’s sweatshirt size, that would be helpful too.

Cooking with Common Threads

We've finished the first recipe, "Hummus in a Blanket", with incredible success! In December, students will prepare and taste a “confetti slaw” featuring produce from local farms and school gardens. Students will bring a copy of the recipe home: Look for it! If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact Kulshan's Common Threads Food Educator: ruby@commonthreadsfarm.org - For more information please visit www.commonthreadsfarm.org

Lost and Found Clothing & Lunch Boxes

Be sure to stop by KMS and grab your Lost & Found items! We have many lunch bags, coats, and sweatshirts in our Lost and Found. We recommend that parents write their student's name clearly on the outside or inside of their lunch box and clothing items. This helps us reunite students and items. Please check our Lost and Found Area in the Commons. Our PTSA donates Lost and Found items to local charities every 4-5 weeks. Thank you!

Evening of Excellence

On Thursday, November 21 our 8th grade team held their Evening of Excellence. Thirty 8th grade students read their essays based on the theme “This I Believe.” All 8th grade students spent hours writing, revising, and presenting essays to their peers and teachers. Among the whole 8th grade class, thirty were selected by peers and teachers to present at the Evening of Excellence. Parents, friends, family members and Kulshan staff came to listen to 8th grade students present heartfelt essays that highlighted pivotal life moments, passions, and deeply held beliefs. True to the Kulshan vision, these students displayed courage and commitment to the writing process. They showed that they are already writers and that they are ready to make a difference in the world. Well done!

KMS Account at Wee Ones Reruns

We have created a consignment account at Wee Ones ReRuns (next to Trader Joes) for Kulshan Middle School. That means you can bring your clean/gently used clothing items to We Ones and ask them to donate proceeds to Kulshan Middle School’s account. Our school will get the credit for the items that sell. (They will give us 40% of the sale price of each item and then 100% of our commission goes straight towards the PTSA and providing for our students.) We Ones can only take items that are clean, no holes, no “pilling”, no stains, and kids sizes only. (Sorry, no adult smalls). Our account code is K945 but if you forget, the have this on file. A special thank you to parent Teddi Johnson Anshus, our Kulshan Clothing Closet Coordinator.

Boys and Girls Club Van

Do you need a ride to the Boys and Girls Club after school? We have a van that will drive you from Kulshan to the Boys and Girls Club! Parent permission forms are available in our main office here at Kulshan. There are only 13 seats available, and it is first come, first serve. The van picks up at Kulshan at 4:00 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If you don't yet have a membership to the Boys and Girls Club, we can also help you with that. Scholarships are available.

Now Hiring in Bellingham Public Schools!

Are you interested in any of our substitute positions? We are interviewing and hiring substitutes custodial, food service and bus drivers. We encourage you (and people you know) to apply! Please tell your neighbors, friends, and family. You are our best recruiters!
