Picture Day is coming! For the fall pictures, we offer a PRE PAY picture program. In order to receive pictures, payment must be made prior or on picture day. Log into ordervgil.com and you will see how you can pay online. There is no payment made with cash on the day. Only online or payment by phone.

I have had several parents notify me of issues happening on the Hannum playground equipment afterschool. Almost always these students are older...3rd-5th grade. Students not behaving appropriately, inappropriate language, and in general making the area not a safe place.

If your child is going to play on the equipment or around the Hannum field, they MUST have parent supervision. I cannot be there to supervise children after school. Many meetings with teachers occur at 3:30 or later. This cannot be a place where students are waiting for their ride. This isn't safe for many reasons. I will try to begin making rounds telling kids that are walking to get on home. Those that are waiting for rides will be sent to the office where you can pick them up. If this continues then I will need to close the playground to EVERYONE, which isn't fair to the children and parents that are using it appropriately.

Please help us in the effort.

District 123 6K Run/Walk with World Vision: On Saturday, September 17th at OLHMS District 123 will once again be hosting our annual 6K walk/run in conjunction with World Vision to raise funds for clean water projects and education for the children of Africa. The 6K distance represents the average distance young children in some African communities must walk to retrieve dirty, contaminated water for their families. We are encouraging all students, staff, community members, families, and friends to join us in this endeavor. The cost is $25 per participant. Registration includes a t-shirt, race bib with a photo of a child you will be assisting, and a finisher's medal. Online registration is open and available. Go to www.teamworldvision.org/team/D123 and click “JOIN OUR TEAM” to register. We are also in need of volunteer support, namely as course monitors who work from 8:30AM-11:00AM to help keep our participants safe.

Now that everyone will be coming back to school, our traffic issues will return as well. Please see the attached map for where to drop off and where you can park if you want to get out and walk your child to their line.

Here are some reminders for helping us get kids in and out of school safely:

• PLEASE pull up as far as you can go when you are letting students out of the car.
• PLEASE do not park across the street and have kids run across to get either to the school or back to your car.
• PLEASE be patient as kids are getting out of the car.
• PLEASE do not block the entrance and exit of the school parking lots and
• PLEASE do not park in the driveway of St. Germaine School. (You may pull into the spots in their parking lot, but do not park in the driveway.)

Next Wednesday September 7 is the first District-Wide LATE START. On Late Start days, school begins at 9:30. Teachers and staff are involved in meetings and will not be out to supervise students until approx. 9:15 am. FLASH will still open at 7:00am, but if your child doesn't go to FLASH and wants breakfast service, that doesn't begin until 9:10am. There are 6 of these every school year, so please mark down these dates. They are always on Wednesdays:

We hope you are able to come to Hannum's Open House on Wednesday September 7th from 6:30-8:00. Teachers will be giving 2 identical 25 minute presentations about expectations for the grade level that night, so if you have more than one child, you can go to up to 2 classrooms and not miss anything.

Since teachers are presenting, we would ask that if possible, you leave your kids at home. We do understand that this is not always easy, so if you need to bring them...please do, but they should not be on their own in the hallways and visiting other classrooms. If you come a bit later and are too late for the first presentation, use the time to visit the PTA table, the OL Public Library table or other community group tables or see our specialists in the MP room. Then you can attend the 2nd session a bit later.

The schedule for the evening is:

6:30-6:50: Come on in and walk to the first classroom

6:50-7:15: First Presentation

7:15-7:20: Walk to the next classroom or visit our specialists in the MP room

7:20-7:45: Second Presentation

7:45-7:55: Visit PTA table, Other organizations tables, visit specialists in the MP room

7:55-8:00: Night has ended. Teachers and staff have a quick wrap up meeting at 8:00

8:00: Teacher meeting in lounge

If you need to discuss something with the teacher specifically about your child, please schedule a follow up meeting with the teacher.

Our district is making district PBIS t shirts so that our kids will have reminders of our Bear Behaviors! Order now and we will have specified days to wear them..but of course they can wear them anytime.

At the beginning of the school year, we always have requests for older siblings to walk through the building to be dismissed with a younger siblings classroom. This creates a chaotic dismissal especially with our K and 1st grade students and their teachers. This is the grade where the children need more supervision and adding kids to the mix isn't fair to those teachers or the students.

Older siblings can walk around the outside of school to the K/1 doors OR if you are not comfortable with that, they can wait with their teacher until you make your way around to them. I know this is inconvenient, but it does work. Thank you for your understanding.

Our school will be serving nutritious breakfast and lunch every school day. If you qualify, you can receive free or reduced lunches. Please call the office if you need information about how to qualify. The cost of breakfast is $1.50 and the cost of lunch is $3.05.

BREAKFAST will be served in the main hall of our school beginning at 8:10-8:25am. Students will enjoy their breakfast in our multi-purpose room and then will go to their line to start the day.

LUNCH will be ordered with your child's classroom teacher every morning. Students will be able to choose from 2 choices. Students can also bring a home lunch and only order a milk. DOUBLE LUNCH Many of our older students like to order a double lunch. I ask if they have permission and they say they do... then parents are surprised that the lunch balance goes down so quickly. I have told our 4th and 5th grade students that they need to have permission to do this, so please speak to your children about this.

Grade 5 eats from 11:00-11:25

Grades 3 and 4 eat from 11:25-11:50

Kindergarten eats from 11:55-12:20

Grades 1 and 2 eat from 12:20-12:45

Are you going to miss your kids while they are at school? We are in need of help supervising our students during lunch and recess. This is a perfect part time job for someone who just wants to work a few hours a day and enjoys spending time with kids during their favorite time of the day! Come and join our team! Mark your calendars and join us on Friday, September 16th from 5:30-7:30 for our annual Welcome Back Bears Block Party! Come out and play some games, eat some food (hot dog and other consessions will be sold), and listen to some music while meeting up with old friends and making new ones! This is a free event but all children must be accompanied by an adult.
