The School Year is Falling Into Place!
Hello October! It is so hard to believe we have concluded our sixth week of school and the beautiful season of fall is here. As we see the season change, we also see our school family changing and growing as the school year is falling into place. It is great to see our fifth and sixth graders working together along with teachers and staff.
Thank you parents, guardians and friends for your ongoing support that has been shown in so many ways. We appreciate all of your efforts to ensure your child/children arrive to school on time ideally by 7:45a.m, know how they are getting home in the afternoon and are picked up by 3:00p.m. Most importantly, for being great role models for your children through your many acts of kindness such as donating cases of water, being there when we need your help and knowing we are here for you and your child!
If you ever have any questions, concerns or we can be of help in any way you are always welcome to contact us. We appreciate the opportunity to work with you and your child/children.
Enjoy the beautiful season of fall!
Sincerely,
5th and 6th Grade Center Admin Team:
Susan Long, Russ Dial, and Michelle Gilmer
NINE HOUSES- ONE FAMILY
CONGRATULATIONS MERAKI!
Our House teams met on Wednesday, September 30, for a team building activity and the monthly PRO lesson. Our character focus for October will be Responsibility. We brainstormed ways we can show responsibility at home, at school, to ourselves and to our community.
We also celebrated the Meraki House who earned the most House Points in September! Their House color flag was raised in front of the school and Dr. Robinson came to their House meeting to congratulate them. On Thursday, the Meraki House members were given a special spirit day to wear a hat. We encouraged all students and staff to wear Meraki's color (light blue) to celebrate their accomplishment and reinforce that, while we have Nine Houses, we are One Family!
Our students are working hard to earn House Points by showing great PRO behavior and working hard to achieve academic growth and success! We can't wait to see which House will be the October Point Leader!
Counselor Connections
We congratulate our PRO leaders of the month representing the September character word: RESPECT as well as our TOP DOG bus riders nominated by the transportation department. Each month we will select leaders demonstrating outstanding character. During the month of October we will help our students learn more about Responsibility.
In October, we will select twelve peer mediators. Six boys and six girls based on students that completed an application. They will be trained to help mediate conflicts between peers. Training will begin in October. Peer Mediation is a conflict resolution program designed to reduce the number of conflicts in the school setting, empower students with the ability to resolve their own conflicts, and teach conflict resolution skills. The Sikeston Middle School has been training peer mediators for twelve years and it has been very successful in helping reduce conflicts in and out of the classroom.
LIBRARY CORNER
The library is always a busy place and this year is no exception! Our students are having a great time ordering the perfect library books through our BookHub program. Students can make their selections online in our Destiny Discover library catalog and then can put the exact books they want on hold to be picked up from our library! Or if they aren’t sure what book they want, they can circle three things on the BookHub form to help them figure out what type of books they are looking for and we help them complete their order.
Students can access Destiny Discover by scanning the QR code above, going to the Library Media Center website page or by clicking the link in their SPS Bookmarks folder when they log-in. https://search.follettsoftware.com/metasearch/ui/5563
Our Mark Twain Reading Award program has started. Check out what titles are on the list here. Students have until March 1 to read at least four of the twelve nominees in order to be able to vote for which book will win. Each time a student reads and passes an AR test on one of these books they get a prize from our treasure boxes. Students who read four or more will get to come to a party at the end of the school year. And to make it even easier – several of the nominees are available as e-books which can be read online anytime of the day!
And finally, we are planning on having a modified Fall Book Fair the last week in October. We are looking for parent volunteers to help with it. If you could spare a few hours to help, please call 471-0792 or e-mail me at thowe@spsr6.org.
There are always a lot of things happening in our library! If you have any questions, please feel free to call anytime!
Until next time…..Keep Reading!!!
