This week in ELA classes, students will take the Unit 3 summative. We will then begin Unit 4- “People and the Planet.” The texts students will read and analyze will all answer the Unit 4 essential question, “what effects do people have on the environment?” Throughout this unit, students will learn about the following topics: imagery, persuasive appeal, irony, tone, lyric poetry, prefixes, suffixes, connotations, theme, and mood. Later in the unit, students will read the novel, “Hoot” by Carol Hiaasen.
Mrs. Boyer's Reading Advancement Program
This week, we continued to read about World War II and studied Pearl Harbor. The students asked some very intriguing questions and did some research on the attack on Pearl Harbor. Next week, we are going to start to learn about the Holocaust. We will read some profiles of real people who survived the Holocaust and present on those people. We will work on the skills of inferencing and putting events in chronological order. The students' Lexile levels will change on February 1st, so be sure to ask your student how they did for the month of January!
MATH - Mr. Kolb
Accelerated 7 students are on the same track currently that Grade 7 students are. They will begin with Two-Step Equations, but will solve Equations iinvolving the Distributive Property as well.
SOCIAL STUDIES - Mrs. Hess
Last week, students learned about our first 5 presidents’ foreign policies. Next week, students will finish the chapter by creating a tombstone for each of the presidents we learned about. Each tombstone will include an engraving and symbol to represent that president’s foreign policy. We will finish Unit 4 by learning about Andrew Jackson and his Indian Removal Policy, and the consequences it had for hundreds of Native Americans on the Trail of Tears. We will end the week by reviewing and taking a test (CSA) over Unit 4.
SCIENCE - Mrs. Arndt
Last week, we focused on how all the populations in an ecosystem can affect each other, regardless of how close they are on the food web. Next week, we will be finishing up our Populations and Ecosystems Unit with students taking their summative assessment on Thursday, February 2. We will be reviewing at the beginning of the week and several review materials will be posted on Google Classroom.
