Hawk Highlights
Fall Edition
On behalf of the St. Georges team of educators, I want to thank our parents and business partners for an excellent start to the school year. Our students and staff have done an outstanding job of returning to the rigors of five day a week instruction. Our staff and students sponsored and participated in several activities promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within our school community. Also, students had the opportunity to settle into their coursework and strive for excellence in the classrooms and work alongside their instructors in their career areas. Our student athletes met success on and off the playing field during our fall sporting events. Finally, our students were given the opportunity to participate in many school activities including a memorable spirit week and homecoming dance. I am proud of our students and staff for learning and growing as individuals and collectively throughout the first marking period. We have laid the foundation for a great school year. Please review the accomplishments and information in this newsletter and continue supporting your child soaring high as a Hawk!

No hoodies, hats, or head coverings other than those that are for religious or health reasons can be worn in the building.
Facemasks must be worn properly at all times, over mouth and nose, except when eating in the cafeteria.
No food or drink, including coffee, in classrooms or career areas. Students may eat breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria. Whatever food is not consumed in the cafeteria, must be discarded before going to class.
Students need to be on time to class. Students should plan bathroom breaks and locker visits accordingly to be sure that they are on time to class.
If a student needs to use the bathroom during class or leave the classroom for any reason, the student must have a hall pass signed by the teacher.
Cell phone use is at the discretion of the teacher. Many teachers do not allow cell phones to be used in class. If you need to communicate with your child, please call the main office. Students might have to wait until after class to receive and/or respond to your message if they are contacted by cell phone or text.
Athletics Update
As the fall season approaches its end of the regular season and the beginning of our playoff season, St. Georges student athletes have experienced a fair share of successes. Below, those successes are outlined by sport.
Football
As of today, our football team has competed in every game, earning a record of 6-3. Being the only team in the top football division to schedule and compete against all other top division teams, St. Georges will be tournament ready come postseason time. One of the most exciting finishes of the season occurred at Abessinio Stadium when our Hawks up-ended Sallies 21-14. A big win over our rival district school, Hodgson, became the largest point differential in school history and in the rivalry, 56-0. Tough losses to Henlopen conference schools Smyrna and Dover were disappointing but showed the team that they can compete with the big dogs. After a lopsided loss to Middletown, St. Georges got back on their feet with their defensive battle against Sussex Central. The Hawks are focused on their final game against William Penn on the road to finish the regular season in a positive way.
Cross Country
The boys and girls teams this year had seen improvements in personal times despite their 4-6 and 3-7 records respectively. A major highlight for both the girls and boys teams was their victory over Caravel and Hodgson in their tri-meet at Lums Pond. The Blue Hen Conference meet was held at Bellevue State Park and both teams represented SG well with top finisher, senior Dominic DiSabatino with a sub-20 time for the boys, and freshman McKenna Fitzwater and junior Aaliya Martinez-Ensor finishing back to back in the top 30 for the girls. Teams will continue their postseason trail with the County Championships and the State Championships over the next two weeks.
Field Hockey
Our lady hawk field hockey team has shown incredible resilience over the 2021 season. After dropping the first 3 games of the season, the lady hawks rebounded and won the next 9 out of 11 games. Victories over Conference rivals, Middletown and William Penn were highlights of the season so far. St. Georges had one of their largest scoring games in a 7-0 flurry over Mount Pleasant recently.
Boys Soccer
This team led by a senior heavy roster led by team leading scorer Miguel Sanchez, has posted a record of 10-3-1 with one more game in the regular season against Sussex Academy. Big wins against Conference opponents William Penn and Middletown have helped position the Hawks in a postseason run in the upcoming weeks. St. Georges saw two double overtime games with one ending up 2-3 vs. Caravel and the latest in a 0-0 tie with Newark Charter. Justin Null is no novice in state tournament experience. He has led our Hawks in the postseason many times in the 14 years he has been at the helm of our program.
Volleyball
Our young lady Hawk Volleyball team saw growth in their 2021 season finishing 7-8, an improvement from their 5-7 record from the previous year. Although 4 outstanding players graduate at the end of the year from the roster, the returning players have accumulated plenty of varsity experience to look forward to making an impact next season. St. Georges Volleyball hosted many important events during their games, including a teacher appreciation event, a B+ Fundraiser for the fight against childhood cancer, and a SL24 Unlocke the Light Suicide prevention program to highlight resources available for young people suffering from depression.
Winter Season Notes
The winter season began on November 8th. Student athletes interested in participating, must have a DIAA physical on file that is dated April 1, 2021 or later prior to trying out. Presently, all competing athletes and spectators indoors must continue to abide by the state-mandated mask policy.
