We Are Called
Jan. 7, 2022
From Mrs. Rhodes
Happy 2022! It is great to start the second semester. The teachers began their year with a day of formation. We started with our scheduled School of Faith day. As we are reading Genesis, we are considering the lessons we learn and can teach our SHOJ children. We reflected on what the voice of the Father sounds like and how we lead with love. Then we reflected on our teaching: our goals, reflecting on the past, and supporting each other in small groups to become better.
We continue to take our mid-year MAP tests to help us know where the children are and what they are ready for next. We know that test results are only one indicator of success, but also know that studying what they have learned and where our students are performing helps us plan for growth.
This month we are talking about how "We are Called to Community". The first place that anyone learns about community is in the family. Virtues that help us be part of a community to practice this month are: temperance - sincerity, openness and truthfulness in one's words and action; obedience - assenting to rightful authority with our resistance; and responsibility - fulfilling one's just duties. I hope that you find some time to work on these virtues in your homes this month!
Thank you for sharing your children with us and know that we see in them God's good work.
From everyone at school, thank you for the generous donations to the teacher fund, it was a tremendous blessing. We look forward to a great 2022!
We are Called!

From the Nurse 's Office
We continue to navigate this pandemic while at the same time remembering that these months we typically have a large number of students absent for illness. This past week we continue to see viruses on the rise and the health department realizes that contact tracing is difficult with the rapid spread. We ask that you keep children home if they show any signs of illness. Please notify the school nurse if you need clarification on any infection. This, along with washing hands, rest and good nutrition goes a long way. Click on the picture above for Johnson County's Recommendations.

Hello SHOJ parents!
It’s that time again!! The 2022 Kindest Kansas Citian contest is right around the corner and I can’t wait to feel the love in the building this spring through our student’s essays about the special people they nominate.
Here’s what you need to know about the contest:
I will be talking about the contest when I come in for lessons this month. If students want to participate, they need to submit a one-page essay and/or a drawing (see contest rules for age groups below) describing the KIND and caring ways of someone who is…
• 18 years or older
• NOT in their family
• Living in the KC metro area
The deadline for the submissions is Friday, February 11th.
Contest rules:
• Kindergarten through 2nd grade students are encouraged to draw a picture of their nominee and write a two sentence description about that person.
• 3rd through 5th grade students are encouraged to write a minimum of four sentences on their submission form describing their nominee.
• 6th through 8th grade students are encouraged to write a one page essay describing their nominee.

Here’s what the contest is all about…
For over 31 years, students in Kansas City have nominated the kindest people they know for the Kindest Kansas Citian Contest. This year Sacred Heart of Jesus will be participating in the 2022 Kindest Kansas Citian Contest. The Kindest Kansas Citian Contest is an awesome way to recognize the kind and caring ways of someone else by giving back that love and care in this special way.
The anti-violence group Stop Violence! that is made up of many Kansas City citizens (both KS and MO), sponsor this contest in an effort to find the GOOD things that are happening in our community. School age children from the entire metro area are encouraged to nominate someone who has shown them kindness and is NOT in their family.
I will communicate the rules of the contest in detail to the students during my counselor lessons. There will be extra copies outside my office for students if they misplace their submission form.
This is truly a wonderful celebration for BOTH the students and the nominees. Please encourage your students to participate. I will be putting this information in the newsletter for parents, but feel free to send this to parents in your weekly email blast.
The deadline for the submissions is Friday, February 11th.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
Gratefully,
Lori
