  • No classes will be held during Labor Day Weekend (9/2) and Thanksgiving Weekend (11/25)

Aaron Hebenstreit | Beginning Chinese 1 & Intermediate Chinese

Aaron Hebenstreit is a Chinese-English translator, reviser, interpreter, and language teacher. He has worked as a linguist for the United Nations and in the language service industry in various countries over the past ten years, translating for international organizations, interpreting for private- and public-sector clients, and teaching for NYU. From the unique perspective of a native English speaker, he is teaching Chinese at the University of Texas at Dallas beginning in Fall 2023.


He received his M.A. in Translation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and B.A. in German from the University of Rhode Island International Engineering Program.

Dr. Neal Liang | Beginning Chinese 2 & Advanced Chinese

Dr. Neal Liang came to the U.S. for his undergraduate study in Mass Communications at the University of Utah. He then worked in mass media and IT industries before being accepted into the PhD program in Linguistics at UT Arlington. His dissertation title is "The Acquisition of Chinese Classifiers by L2 Adult Learners of Chinese". He started teaching Chinese as an adjunct faculty at UTA in 2006 and earned his PhD degree in 2009. He later accepted a Lecturer position at Northern Arizona University and taught Chinese courses for one year.

In 2010, he returned to UTA as a Senior Lecturer and was put in charge of the development of the Chinese program in the Modern Languages Department. During this period, the Chinese minor and major in Critical Language and International Study. In 2013, Dr. Liang became Assistant Professor and was asked to manage the growing Chinese section. He has been since teaching all levels of Chinese course, recruiting and retaining students, creating extracurricular activities, serving the communities both domestically and internationally. One of several achievements during Dr. Liang's tenure as the Chinese Section Coordinator is the creation and development of CLIS-Chinese major in 2013. In three years, the Chinese program has graduated five Chinese major students who continue on to their graduate studies or work as a language teacher in local public school.

Currently, Dr. Liang devotes much of his time and resources in developing an online Chinese tutoring program where UTA students receive free supplemental tutoring from pre-service teachers in Taiwan or China. The program is well received by both UTA students and the collaborating universities. The program is also recognized by the United States Distance Learning Association and it award Dr. Liang "Best Practices Award for Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching in the field of Online Technology" in May, 2015.

Nutan Lal | Introductory Hindi 1 & 2

Nutan Lal is a state certified language teacher and has been teaching Hindi language for the last 18 years which includes UT Dallas, Franklin High School, Somerset: New Jersey and HEBISD: Texas. She has been associated with a non-profit organization and has been actively involved in several activities including managing a Hindi School of more than 150 students, teaching, conducting poem recitals, organizing events, and more.


Prof. Lal received her Master's degree in Mathematics & Hindi and her Bachelor's degree in Education from India. She is fluent in Hindi, English and Bhojpuri. Hindi is her native language.


She is excited to teach you this semester!

Dr. Hyojin Woo | Beginning Korean

Born in South Korea, Hyojin Woo began studying piano at five and received an early education in music theory and composition at the renowned Sunhwa Art High School in Seoul.


She received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in music composition from Seoul National University summa cum laude. She also earned her second Master of Music degree in music theory and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music composition from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX.


She is serving as an associate professor of music at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie. She resides in Arlington with her husband, Dr. Kwangsun Yoo.


She has a daughter, Joanne, who just married Patrick this summer, and a son, Jaden, a junior student at UTD.

Japanese Courses Japanese Courses

We are very excited to collaborate with the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth (JASDFW) to offer beginning Japanese courses!

JASDFW offers three beginning level courses that help build foundations of learning the Japanese language. All three classes focus on conversational Japanese and will cover familiar topics regularly encountered in daily life and friendly social situations. Students will learn some basic Japanese grammar and sentence structures as they learn how to introduce themselves, share personal details, daily routines, and future plans in Japanese. They will also learn familiar and basic expressions, and a variety of greetings useful in daily conversations. The goal is to have a basic understanding of how the language is used in different social circumstances while learning some essential Japanese language structures and cultural values.

While this course is focused on conversational Japanese, by the end of the course, students will be able to recognize Hiragana and its differences between the other writing systems.

The courses are offered throughout the year and will have 8 sessions in the evening for 1 hour. Click on the following link for more details about the JASDFW course schedule:

This Japanese class will be conducted via Zoom. Attendees must have a device with audio and video capabilities, as well as an internet connection. About the Lead Instructor

Ikuko Fujiwara’s academic and professional background is in TESOL and Composition, which began with earning a Master’s degree in TESOL from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her career has been devoted to instruction and supporting student success while promoting diversity and inclusion in educational spaces. She has experience teaching Japanese, ESOL and college composition at various colleges in the United States. She is committed to creating inclusive and meaningful learning spaces where people engage in cross-cultural/intercultural understanding and learn to use language in empowering ways.
